GAME plans to close 10% of stores

This article is over 12 years old and may contain outdated information

High-street videogame retailer, GAME, will be closing 60 of its stores by Christmas 2013. That will reduce its store numbers by almost 10 percent, down from 610 to 550.
Previously, the company had planned to close only 25 by the same date. Website gameplay.co.uk will also be shut down (from next week), you will be redirected to Gamestation.co.uk.
A statement from GAME says that Gameplay’s closure is planned so that “customers can enjoy the benefits of the new online platform that we launched last year.”
The year is barely two months old, and yet GAME has already been making headlines for the wrong financial reasons. Earlier this month is was revealed that the company had lost its credit insurance, which has the potential to reduce its ability to purchase and stock new releases.
This led to EA boss John Riccitiello voicing concerns over the effect a GAME collapse could have on the industry as a whole.
