This is going to get confusing. There’s a (non-online) RPG based on the Song of Ice and Fire book series by George RR Martin on the way from Cyanide (who also developed the PC-only strategy game A Game of Thrones: Genesis). Now there’s an MMO coming from Bigpoint, based on the HBO televised series of the books. And, like Cyanide’s game, it’s also called Game of Thrones.
If you’re not entirely following this, I don’t blame you.
Anyway, this Game of Thrones game will be demonstrated by Bigpoint at the upcoming San Francisco Game Developers Conference in early March. It’ll be a browser-based MMO/RPG, running on the Unity engine (which also powered Bigpoint’s Battlestar Galactica Online).
Bigpoint describe your activities in the game as follows: “The bloodthirsty struggle for power, corruption, and deception will persist. To ensure survival of their dynasty, players must master combat and politics.” If they can pull it off, it sounds suitably intriguing.
A closed beta is planned for autumn 2012.
