Epic Games has recently teamed up with the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) to bring internationally-recognized age and content ratings to Fortnite creator islands. User-generated content could hurt the age rating of Fortnite if it goes too far, especially with user-generated content. Through Epic’s partnership with the IARC, parents can decide what their kids play and keep user-made levels under control at the same time. Below, we’ll explain how it works and how it affects everyone involved.
What does the IARC Rating System mean for Fortnite?
The IARC Rating System will make Fortnite content a lot more regulated and safer for younger players. It also gives parents the ability to filter islands they don’t want their children to play and helps Epic Games keep islands in check. With the introduction of the IARC rating system, players and creators in Fortnite will see these changes:
-
Island Creators will need to fill out questionnaires on their islands to obtain age ratings for their creations.
-
Parents and guardians will have access to improved parental controls. This will help parents set content age rating limits based on their family’s preferences.
-
Players who do not fill out the IARC questionnaire for their islands will face the consequence of having their creations delisted. These islands cannot be accessed or played by anyone else.
-
Starting on November 14, all first and third-party content in Fortnite will be required to have an IARC-assigned rating. These ratings will range from E for Everyone to a maximum rating of T for Teen.
It may seem like drastic changes, but Epic Games will need to oversee user-generated content very closely if they don’t want trouble with ratings boards.

What are the ratings from the IARC?
The official website states that these are the ratings from the IARC:
-
Ages 3+
-
Ages 7+
-
Ages 12+
-
Ages 16+
-
Ages 18+
Epic Games, however, mentioned that island creators can be rated E for Everyone or T for Teens. It is doubtful that the IARC will give a special rating just to Epic Games since the point is to make it easy to understand internationally and they don’t play favorites. It’s likely that the IARC might give a rating to an island on Fortnite, and Fortnite may simply provide a letter alongside it.
Fortnite’s rating is T for Teens, so any island above that could hurt Fortnite’s overall rating. As such, we expect a delisting for any island above the T rating.

What is the Deadline to fill out the IARC Questionnaire in Fortnite?
Island creators should complete the questionnaire before November 14 to make sure their islands receive age-based IARC ratings and are not delisted. The IARC questionnaire will be accessible in the Creator Portal starting on October 16.
What happens if you don’t fill out the IARC Questionnaire?
Islands that do not have an assigned IARC rating due to the questionnaire not being filled out will be delisted on November 14. Players will no longer be able to access or play these islands, which directly impacts your visibility and revenue. This isn’t a choice, you have to do this or you won’t be able to display your content.
