Just like Llamas and Safes, a bit of luck will be required to stumble across a Cosmic Chest in Fortnite, but knowing the right locations to look will give you better odds. Another key part to successfully obtaining the rewards from these chests will require the help of your full team. That’s right, it pays to have friends or at least allies. Cosmic chests appear to spawn in remote locations, but teams of four should have decent luck at combing the wilderness for these prized treasures.

How to open Cosmic Chests

Opening Cosmic Chests isn’t exactly hard, but it does take some coordination and patience. The first thing to note is that the whole team needs to be on the same page. Team is mentioned, as Squads, Duos, and Trios all include Cosmic Chests. You also don’t need a full party for the specific game mode to complete this task. For example, if you can queue without a third person in Squads and still open a Cosmic Chest. It may also be possible to complete the task with the remaining teammates if a party member leaves during a match, but this isn’t certain yet.

The second thing to remember is that Fortnite is a battle royale. The process of opening one of these chests will leave your team vulnerable for a time. One such way to prevent an ambush may be to build around the area for protection.

To get started with cracking one of these chests open, hit a glowing tile on the crystal. Your teammates will then need to do the same. Hitting the wrong tiles can reset the process, so be careful. Eventually, a tendril of energy will extend out to one of the players. That’s their cue to hit a weakpoint on the crystal. The crystal will then crack and this process will need to be repeated in a rotational order until the crystal shatters. The chest will then automatically open.

Rewards

Players will receive a mix of random rewards for opening a Cosmic Chest. Items like weapons and ammo will drop to help you in the current match, but rewards like XP, Alien Artifacts, and gold bars will also be awarded individually. Knowing how to open a Cosmic Chest now and not later in the season should help you and your friends get the best rewards out of the Battle Pass for this season of Fortnite.
