Chasing the Cat is a multi-part sidequest in Forspoken. These activities take place in the city of Cipal, where you’ll be roaming around in several chapters. Along the way, you’ll pick up a special item that allows you to purchase a couple of gear pieces. Here’s our Forspoken Chasing the Cat guide to help you with Cipal detours and Poppet items for the Pelerine Cloak and Stranith Cloaks.

The Basics of Chasing Cute Cats
Each Chasing the Cat detour in Forspoken becomes available as you progress further in the campaign (i.e., one sidequest occurs in Chapter 3, and another in Chapter 4, and so on). While the game does warn you that advancing the story further might prematurely fail optional activities, you don’t need to worry about this quest chain. In fact, after beating the final boss, you can still look for the cats in Cipal.
As such, our Forspoken Chasing the Cat guide assumes that you just want to find them at your leisure, not constrained by which chapter they’ll initially appear. For now, you can look at the map below. We’ve labeled each feline individually, while the letters A and B correspond to the first and second time that you’d look for them.
Here are some other tidbits:
- Upon interacting with a cat, they’ll run off. You’ll want to stay close to them as they dash around the city. If you’re a few meters behind, you’ll lose sight of them and you have to restart.
- When you successfully track down your first cat (i.e., Calico), you’ll receive a Poppet.
- Poppets give you access to the tailor NPC in Cipal’s market square (i.e., star icon). The NPC sells a couple of materials, as well as two cloaks (we’ll talk about these later).
- Don’t forget to pet the cats when you’re done. The action doesn’t give rewards, but you know you want to anyway because cats are awesome.
1: Calico Cat
- The Calico Cat is in Cipal’s shantytown close to the pond and a couple of washerwomen. It’s likely that this is the first Chasing the Cat quest you’ll do in Forspoken.
2A: Black and White Cat
- This fella is to the left of the Shady Tree inn. You’ll see a wall here with a scaffolding just before the archway to Harkiska Grove.
3A: Striped Cat
- Go past the archway and check the wall beside Harkiska Grove.
4A: Grey Cat
- Head up the steps to the Upper City. Then, make a left in the alleyway. You should see this cat near several blue pillars.
5A: Black Cat
- This Chasing the Cat detour in Forspoken only becomes available in Chapter 13, which is essentially the post-campaign stage after you take out the final boss. Go through the archway that divides the Lower City and Upper City. You’ll see it in front of a stall.
2B: Black and White Cat (again)
- Assuming you already tracked down the Black and White Cat (i.e., 2A), you can run after it again. This time, it’s all the way to the meadows in the northeast. If you’ve done an early-game sidequest to tour the city, you’ll remember this area as the farmlands with sheep. If not, the fastest way to get there is to look for a gatehouse in the eastern section. You’ll see the fields just beyond. The cat is in the part where the inner walls of the city connect to the aqueducts.
3B: Striped Cat (again)
- This fella is right next to the northeast spire.
4B: Gray Cat (again)
- Go to the city gates in the Lower City. This furball is behind a burned-out home.
5B: Black Cat (again)
- Last but not least, you’ll spot this fella right next to where you found the Calico. It’s behind a wall near the pond. This completes all Chasing the Cat Cipal detours in Forspoken. But, you’re not done yet.
Exchanging Your Poppet Items for the Pelerine Cloak and Stranith Cloak
Remember the tailor NPC we mentioned earlier? It’s time to exchange your Forspoken Poppet items for goodies like the Pelegrine Cloak, Stranith Cloak, Nugget, and Bumbershoot. The Pelerine Cloak provides a buff where you could get healed if you land a critical hit. The Stranith Cloak, meanwhile, shortens the duration of negative status effects. After purchasing all the goodies, you’ll receive an achievement called “A Roaring Trade.”
Anyway, that’s all there is to it for this particular quest chain in Forspoken. Since we’ve talked a lot about cats, don’t forget to explore the world of Athia to discover magical meowers known as Tanta’s Familiars.
Forspoken is available via Steam.
