Rebel Wolves Studio Witcher 3 Director

Former Witcher 3 director reveals Rebel Wolves, a new studio working on a dark fantasy RPG

Wolves howling.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is one of my top favorite games of all time. To me, it’s one of those games I wish I could forget, just so I can experience it all over again. So when its director announces that he’s formed a team to create a new RPG, I’ll listen up. Rebel Wolves is a new studio under the former Witcher 3 director, and its first task is to create a dark fantasy RPG using Unreal Engine 5.

Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, who was also the production/secondary game director for Cyberpunk 2077, left CD Projekt RED, but he didn’t go alone. Tomaszkiewicz is joined by fellow CDPR and industry veterans in the creation of the Rebel Wolves studio. The team was formed with the need to create “vibrant virtual worlds, filled to the brim with powerful emotions and unique experiences.” That doesn’t sound too far off from The Witcher and similar games. Tomaszkiewicz and crew want to “evolve the cRPG genre,” and they certainly have the pedigree to pull it off.

“For all of us here at Rebel Wolves, video games were always something we felt destined to do—something ingrained in our DNA,” Tomaszkiewicz said in a press release. “Personally, I couldn’t be happier to have banded together with friends who share this passion. We’re developing a video game we’d like to play in a way that games should be made. We want to evolve the cRPG genre by creating unforgettable stories and stirring deep emotions, all while working as a tightly knit team united by a shared goal and ambition. Collectively, we envision Rebel Wolves as a place where experienced game developers can reignite their passion, where they can focus on their craft and pour their love into an amazing, ambitious title. We want to stay small and agile—a place where people know and care for each other.”

What’s next on the horizon

Obviously, with the studio and game just being announced, we won’t know much about the latter for some time. However, today’s reveal comes paired with the first concept art. In it, we see what appears to be a spear-wielding elf being chased down a mountain. One hand, with sharpened claws, is slowing his descent. I’m guessing the claws are a magical ability of some sort that you can use in the game. Just below are a few soldiers of a kingdom that loves bats. In the distance, there’s a small town, a keep, and a far-off castle. It looks similar to what we saw in The Witcher, but far grungier.

We’ve got our eye on Rebel Wolves, and will keep you up to date with its upcoming project. Whatever that may be.
