The upcoming movie based on Gearbox’s Borderlands franchise has been picking up a lot of steam lately. While still in pre-production, most of the main cast has been revealed. Today, we got the confirmation of another playable character from Borderlands 2 being added to the cast. According to the The Hollywood Reporter, the Borderlands movie has found its muscle-bound Krieg in the form of German-born Florian Munteanu.
All of the the previous casting announcements have been some pretty heavy hitters. For example, Jack Black is playing Claptrap, Jamie Lee Curtis is Tannis, Cate Blanchett is Lilith, and Kevin Hart is playing Roland. Compared to some of the names on that list, Munteanu is fairly unknown. Most will recognize him as Viktor Drago from Creed II alongside Michael B. Jordan. In that follow up to the Rocky franchise, Munteanu was cast as the son of Ivan Drago, who was played by Dolph Lundgren in Rocky IV.
In fact, Munteanu only has two other acting credits to his name besides Creed II (and now, Borderlands.) The first was a German short film titled Bogat, and the second is the upcoming Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings from Marvel Studios. In the latter, he will play Razor Fist, an obscure Marvel villain with swords for hands (yes, comics are dumb, and that is why we love them).
If he’s cast, he’s cast
It is safe to say that Munteanu’s career is on a steady upward track moving into Borderlands, which will be directed by Eli Roth. In the film, Krieg is the protector of Tiny Tina who will be played by Ariana Greenblatt. You might remember Greenblatt as young Gamora from Avengers: Infinity War.
Krieg is a fairly popular in the Borderlands series. He even had his own DLC chapter in Borderlands 3 titled Pyscho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck. In the games Krieg is a bandit who was experimented on by Dr. Benedict and turned into a psycho. After killing Benedict and escaping his lab, Krieg takes on a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde-type role, switching between his more docile human half and the rampaging psycho.
The Borderlands movie currently has no release date as it is still very early in production. The Borderlands 3 Director’s Cut releases in less than two weeks if you want to scratch that looter shooter itch until we know more about the upcoming film.
