Paradox and Fatshark are adding female warriors to their close combat Viking battle title War of the Vikings.

Called the “Shieldmaiden” mini-expansion, the update brings a new class to both the Viking and Saxon factions with the class being based on real warrior women. The good news is that this piece of additional content is being added for free.

The female warriors launch alongside new customisation DLC which includes “a wealth of customisation options to the new female warriors” and “nonsensical ‘boob armor’ ” is not included which is good to hear.

The DLC also includes new maps, new weapons, and the ability to use a female face for all existing classes. Paradox’ Gordon Van Dyke had this to say about the new classes:

“Out of all of the research and study that went into designing War of the Vikings, the history surrounding shieldmaidens was some of the most fascinating and controversial. Our design reflects the preparations that any warrior, male or female, would have made for battle: practical protection, not sexualized fantasy. We’ve saved the physics for the combat, where it belongs.”

If you already own the Blood Eagle and Valhalla editions then the DLC is already included but if not then it will cost a very reasonable $4.99 (£3.99).
