EvilVEvil multiplayer guide: How to play with friends and solo

Slaying monsters is better with bloodthirsty friends.

EvilVEvil is marketed as a co-op experience, but that’s not the only way to enjoy the title. Let me show you how EvilVEvil works for multiplayer with friends and solo players.

How to play with friends in EvilVEvil

There are a few ways to team up with your buddies in EvilVEvil, but you must decide if you want random players to fill in any gaps. However you choose to play, it makes sense for one person to set everything up so there’s no overlap.

Press Play on the main menu, then select a stage and difficulty. If you set the match to Private, you can manually invite players on your Steam Friends list to join you. Simply press the button highlighted in the picture above to bring up your Steam list. If you can’t see your friends, ensure they aren’t appearing offline, as you can’t invite them unless they are visible.

If you don’t mind a random player coming along for the ride, you can switch the lobby to Public instead. You can also assemble your party in a Private lobby, and switch it to Public to fill the space afterwards.

If you want to play with random players online, you can set up a lobby or join an active one. To host an online lobby, press Play on the main menu, select the stage and difficulty, and then set the lobby to Public (pictured above).

Once your lobby is open to the public, you’re playing the waiting game until people show up. You may be lingering for a while if you play during unsocial hours.

If you want to hop in for a quick match, I recommend joining a pre-existing lobby.

If you select “Random Lobby” from the stage selection screen, you will join a random open session. You can choose a specific difficulty, but you can also uncheck the “Use difficulty” button to leave it up to the lobby owner.

I recommend picking “Random Lobby” and unchecking the Difficulty settings to find a match as fast as possible.

How to play EvilVEvil as a solo player

If you prefer to tackle EvilVEvil alone, it’s pretty easy to set up. Press the Play button on the main menu, then choose the stage and difficulty.

Select “Private” when the Lobby screen appears (pictured above) and choose your character. You can press “Ready” in the bottom-right corner of the screen to start the match as a solo player.

Is EvilVEvil worth it for solo players?

EvilVEvil is a team game, but it’s still fun if you prefer to play alone. You may struggle with higher difficulties, but as we mentioned in our review, the Story mode will be fine.

You can play through the entire campaign alone and earn EXP and unlockables as if you were with a squad. Remember that EXP is dished out at a reduced rate on lower difficulties, so your progression may be slower than if you play online.

EvilVEvil isn’t the most technically demanding game, but you can dramatically alter how it looks and feels in the Options menu. Graphics settings can make the game run more smoothly, so they are important to get right before heading into multiplayer.
