Atlus is a developer known for making games like Persona 3 Portable and the Shin Megami Tensei franchise. But alongside these is the Etrian Odyssey series. The trilogy was initially released on the Nintendo DS and 3DS from 2007 to 2018. But PC players will finally be able to check out the remastered Etrian Odyssey trilogy when it comes to Steam on June 1. And each game features remastered graphics, music, and quality of life improvements.
Games from Nintendo’s DS systems don’t usually get ports to modern systems. There are, of course, outliers here and there, as a few games have made the leap. But due to the unique design of the consoles, a lot of games are still stuck on those systems. Luckily, it seems that Atlus has been able to bring the first three Etrian Odyssey games to PC with plenty of upgrades along the way. If the short announcement trailer is anything to go by, it looks like they made the leap rather well.
Etrian Odyssey trilogy makes the journey to PC, remastered
The Etrian Odyssey games share a lot of similarities to early first-person dungeon crawlers. And if you were to compare them to Atlus’ own lineup, you could say they’re akin to the early Shin Megami Tensei games. But the Etrian Odyssey series does plenty on its own to stand out from the crowd. For starters, as with most dungeon-based RPGs, the trilogy offers a challenging experience. From tricky enemy encounters to plenty of unique systems to learn, there’s a lot to sink your teeth into.
One of the unique aspects of these games is the way it handles the map. As you explore dungeons it’s up to you to map out the area as you go. So you’ll need to map out pathways, treasure chests, and traps as you go. This mechanic sets Etrian Odyssey apart from its fellow JRPGs. It harkens back to older titles like Ultima, with which you’d need to map out the areas on an actual piece of paper. Luckily each Etrian Odyssey game features a built-in map that lets you plot everything out easily.
Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection releases on PC via Steam on June 1. They won’t come incredibly cheap, however, with an asking price of $39.99 USD each. However, all three games are currently available for pre-order as a bundle for a 33% discount on Steam.
