Remnant: From the Ashes is sure to draw the most attention, as it’s a well known co-op shooter that can give most triple-A titles a run for their money. Remnant was developed by Gunfire Games and released in 2018 to a very positive reception. It’s praised for its solid and satisfying gameplay in addition to the strong execution of procedurally generated levels. Some hail Remnant as Dark Souls with guns, because of the challenging boss fights and diverse enemies. We’ll leave that up to you to decide. It’s also worth mentioning that the graphics hold up incredibly well today, and the game runs smooth on most systems.

Digging deeper into the story of Remnant: From the Ashes, we can see that it’s a bit dark at times, but liberating in the sense that we as the players save humanity from said darkness. The story traverses multiple dimensions and worlds in a quest to defeat the ancient evil known as the Root.

Killer timing

The timing of this free game couldn’t better too, because the upcoming Subject 2923 expansion arrives August 20, and will properly tie-up the narrative. There’s also the Swamps of Corsus expansion, which is more gameplay-centric. The main draw for that expansion is the new survival mode. If slaying monsters from different dimensions isn’t your cup of tea, The Alto Collection might be what you’re looking for. Developed by Team Alto, it’s a casual 2D sidescrolling adventure that takes you on journeys through deserts and alpine regions. The art style relies on minimalism, which creates a captivating and soothing visual experience. The collection boasts over 120 levels, 360 goals, 7 unique characters, and a workshop full of upgrades. It focuses on exploration and the thrill of movement, somewhat like a Sonic game, but Alto aims to be inspiring as well as exhilarating.

Alto Collection Epic free games

In addition to the normal offering of weekly epic free games, Total War Saga: Troy is also available for the next 24 hours. If you’re not familiar with it, it’s a brand new game, so the offer is a big deal. Better jump on that one if you like strategy games. Next week is shaping up to be a good offering on the Epic Games Store as well, with Enter the Gungeon and God’s Trigger on the agenda.
