Spirit Ashes are summons that you can acquire in Elden Ring. They can be boosted further if you have the right items for the job. Here’s our Elden Ring guide to help you upgrade Spirit Ash Summons through Roderika’s Spirit Tuning and the use of the Chrysalids’ Memento.

Elden Ring guide – How to upgrade Spirit Ash Summons via Spirit Tuning with Roderika
Getting the Spirit Calling Bell from Renna
To clarify, there are two important NPCs if you want to upgrade Spirit Ash Summons in Elden Ring. The first is the witch, Renna, since she’s the one who gives you the Spirit Calling Bell. You’ll receive this after obtaining Torrent from Melina. Simply return to the Church of Elleh Site of Grace at night, and talk to Renna there. She’ll even give you the Lone Wolf Ashes, your first summoning item.
Meeting Roderika in Stormhill Shack
Just past that point as mentioned in our Limgrave walkthrough, you’ll arrive in Stormhill Shack. This is the home of Roderika, an even more important NPC if you wish to upgrade Spirit Ash Summons in Elden Ring.
Roderika should give you the Spirit Jellyfish Ashes summon after you exhaust her dialogue. If not, you’ll meet her again later and she’ll hand it over.
Meeting Roderika in Roundtable Hold
Once you’ve defeated Margit the Fell Omen and Godrick the Grafted, you can return to Stormhill Shack to discover that Roderika is no longer there, though you can pick up a Golden Seed.
But, if you travel back to Roundtable Hold, you’ll see her standing next to the fireplace. At this point, Roderika will be a resident of Roundtable Hold. She has a personal quest that can be completed, although the requirement is actually hidden. First, make sure that you exhaust Roderika’s dialogue options and, when possible, talk to Smithing Master Hewg as well.
Acquiring the Chrysalids’ Memento
Next, your goal is to find a key item called the Chrysalids’ Memento in Stormveil Castle. If you haven’t acquired it yet, you can use the Rampart Tower Site of Grace.
Run along the ramparts and drop down to the chapel. Make your way to the second floor of the Audience Hall where you encountered the Grafted Scion.
Then, as you reach the passage to the Library, you can drop down to your left to find a pile of corpses under a Troll that’s been hung. Defeat the Stray Dogs here and claim the Chrysalids’ Memento from the pile.
Note: Much later in the campaign, I was also able to find a Crimson Hood here, which looks similar to the cloak that Roderika initially wore.
Spirit Tuning: Upgrading your Spirit Ash Summons in Elden Ring
Return to Roderika and show her the Chrysalids’ Memento. Then, continue talking to her and Smithing Master Hewg. Eventually, Roderika will offer to let you upgrade your Spirit Ash Summons in Elden Ring via the Spirit Tuning function when you talk to her.
Here’s how it works:
- Regular Ashes (i.e., generic summoned mobs), such as the Lone Wolf, Warhawk, Wandering Noble, Marionette Soldier, and the like, all use Grave Glovewort.
- Special Ashes (i.e., named mobs), such as Banished Knight Oleg and Ancient Dragon Knight Kristoff, require Ghost Glovewort.
Grave Glovewort and Ghost Glovewort items in Elden Ring are often found in catacomb/crypt-type dungeons. The former is a green plant with white petals, and the latter has purple ones.
Similar to Smithing Stones and Golden Runes, they also have their own tiers, like Grave Glovewort [1], Grave Glovewort [2], and so on. Ideally, you’ll want to visit these dark dungeons in the game world to amass a lot of these herbs. Lastly, since they don’t respawn, your best bet is to choose the Spirit Ash Summons that you truly prefer.
