Marvel has been pushing into the gaming space more often in recent years. And that trend might be set to continue with another new superhero game. According to industry reporter, Jeff Grubb, a new open-world single-player Black Panther game (codenamed Project Ranier) is in development under Electronic Arts. T’Challa is a prominent Marvel superhero who dons the suit and moniker of Black Panther, protector of the fictional African nation Wakanda.
While speaking on the Game Mess Mornings podcast for Giant Bomb, Grubb said the game will likely be the first from a new development studio, Kevin Stephens. The former studio head of Monolith, makers of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, joined EA last year.
When providing more details about the premise, Grubb mentioned that it will be a new origin story for the character. In the story, the prior Black Panther has already passed away. It’s up to players to take on the mantle of becoming the new Black Panther.
A marvelous time for gamers
We’ll have to wait and see if this rumored Black Panther game comes to fruition. And I hope it does, because the idea of an open-world Wakanda has a lot of potential. In the meantime, there are plenty of other Marvel-based gaming experiences to enjoy. The surprisingly good Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy released only last year. You can try it today if you’re a Game Pass subscriber.
Black Panther himself was added to Marvel’s Avengers as a new playable character last year. Until we get confirmation, it’ll be the best way for fans of the character to try him out in a Marvel game. The much-acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered is coming to PC on August 12, while Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is set to hit PC later this Fall. The tactical RPG Marvel’s Midnight Suns launches for PC on October 7.
