Rumor has it, it all began when Reddit user sanseri shared a mod they found to the Stardew Valley subreddit. The mod itself was pretty much harmless, replacing the bed of your grandpa, who kicks off your journey into the game with a few parting words and a letter. What followed, however, was something really special. Users began sharing memes and mods that changed your dying grandpa’s bed in Stardew Valley. The pendulum swung from good-natured hilarity, all the way to something rather, well, awful. But also hilarious.
It all seems to have started last week when sanseri brought the community’s attention to a “slightly worse grandpa bed” mod. It replaced dear, old grandpa’s comfy-looking bed to what appeared to be a far less-comfy cot. From there, things spiraled out of control. For the last week, some members of the Stardew Valley community engaged in something akin to a ‘dying grandpa’ meme war.
Grandpa and his bed have went through the ringer. There have been art and mods that replace his older bed with something much better, all the way to the far end where grandpa is the bed. There is one meme where two other older, unknown folk are playing ping pong over grandpa. And there’s one with grandpa, but he’s actually dying from an addiction to Jojacola. However, I believe my favorite so far is the one above called, “Grandpa but it was the Saiyan saga,” tying in a classic Dragon Ball meme. It’s beautiful.
He just wanted you to be happy
Great memes are sometimes hard to find, but the ‘dying grandpa’ of Stardew Valley has been a real knee-slapper so far. Granted, some entries are a little NSFW, so be sure not to delve too deeply into that fresh hell with your boss around. The posts seem to be slowing down in regularity, but not in imagination. I’m sure there are plenty more terrible things people plan on doing to poor grandpa soon.
Stardew Valley was the hit farming simulator by developer ConcernedApe. The creator has since moved on, and is working on his next game: Haunted Chocolatier. Let’s hope it’s free of any grandpas.
For his sake.
