All characters in the game have “summoning sickness.” If you aren’t familiar with this Magic: The Gathering term, this means that characters cannot attack the turn they are first played. This prevents players from getting cheap shots in when the other player cannot defend themselves. There are some cards however with “Swift Attack”. Similar to haste in Magic, this lets characters attack the same turn they are summoned. There are also some event cards that can grant characters swift attack. Keep in mind though that even characters with swift attack cannot attack your opponent directly when they are first summoned. That would, for lack of a better term, be broken.

Dragon Ball Card Warriors has four different modes. Training mode lets you play against the CPU and test out new decks. You can even practice with cards you don’t actually own and is a fantastic feature I wish all Digital CCGs had. There are also your standard casual and ranked battles, as well as a tournament mode. Once per month a tournament will be held and players will be randomly selected into one of three teams; red, blue, or green. Seems like a missed opportunity to name the teams something like Ginyu Force, Z-Warriors, or HFIL, but I digress.

At the end of the tournament period the team with the most collective wins will win a special prize. This makes the mode function more like a faction battle than an actual tournament mode. Plus, randomly assigning players teams doesn’t really show which group of players is the best. It is a fun idea, but letting players pick their own teams, like other faction modes do, would have gone a long way.

When you jump into ranked for the first time you will notice that you have a “newcomer ranking”. If you have been playing for less than 30 days you will maintain this ranking until a month passes and then you can begin acquiring standard ranks. At the beginning of a new month when ranks reset all player’s ranks will decrease by three.
