Baldur’s Gate 3 is heavily linked with Dungeons & Dragons, with the two sharing a wider world and ruleset. So it makes sense to think that Baldur’s Gate 3 might have some kind of Dungeon Master mode. This would essentially allow one player to control many aspects of the game that other players would then play through. However, Baldur’s Gate 3 does not have a DM mode, at least not for the time being.
What is DM Mode
Let’s back it up for a second and explain why it may be expected for Baldur’s Gate 3 to have a DM Mode. Larian Studios, the developer of Baldur’s Gate 3, previously released Divinity: Original Sin 2 in 2017. This was a game that was heavily inspired by games like Dungeons & Dragons which included something called Game Master Mode. This mode allowed someone to essentially fulfill the role of a DM from within the virtual space of Divinity: Original Sin 2. You could do almost anything from placing enemies for other players to fight, to fully building out your own map and world with its own story and lore.
Long story short, Game Master Mode was a massive inclusion to that game. It essentially meant it had limitless replayability for those that loved its gameplay. And with how tough it is to get five people around a real table, the option that Divinity presents is awesome to see. But GM Mode also seems to have been a ton of work to implement. And it’s easy to see why Larian Studios has not included it in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Will DM Mode come to Baldur’s Gate 3
There is clearly a desire for the mode from the community. But with how complex Baldur’s Gate 3 is already, it would’ve been a lot of work for the developer. Luckily, Larian Studios founder and Baldur’s Gate 3 director Swen Vincke did confirm that mod support would be coming later down the line. He confirmed this on the Dropped Frames podcast over a week ago. However, he does also mention that it would still take a lot of work to implement a DM Mode into Baldur’s Gate 3. With modding you can’t really rule anything out completely. But for now, DM Mode for Baldur’s Gate 3 is not an option.
Don’t let the lack of a DM Mode dissuade you from checking Baldur’s Gate 3 out though. There’s still a huge amount of content to work through. And before you dive in check out all the classes you’ll be able to choose from.
