With the release of Ark Survival Ascended, we need to know if we can all enjoy the game together, no matter the platform, with cross-play, and if we can pick up where we left off with cross-progression.
In the modern age of gaming, most online titles need to keep their servers open to everyone and anyone who wants to play. Making a game cross-platform only makes the online experience more fun and much more inclusive. The addition of cross-progression also allows players to own multiple copies of the game and switch between consoles.
Will Ark Survival Ascended have cross-play?
It is confirmed, both by the developers and by the Steam sales page, that Ark Survival Ascended will indeed have cross-play. This is excellent news for anyone wanting to take on the prehistoric world with their friends on other platforms. It is always a shame to see a game cutting its online bases up because of differences in console preference.
However, this does open up the problems of skill levels. PC is usually a much easier platform to play games on due to the nature of the mouse and keyboard. It makes for a tough fight for anyone playing with a controller. I imagine, like with most cross-platform games, there will be an option to turn off cross-play in Ark Survival Ascended if you can’t take the heat.
What about cross-progression?
Cross-progression will also be included in Ark Survival Ascended. This means that no matter where you decided to last play the game, you can hop into your own profile and find all your saves and progression.
For me, this is essential. I like to play on multiple different platforms depending on where I am in the day. Sometimes a Steam deck or laptop is my best option. However, if I have the chance, a big comfy sofa and wall-mounted TV is ideal. With cross-progression, I no longer need to worry.
