Discord voice chat integration looks to be making its way to PlayStation consoles. A recent leak shows that the popular messaging and voice chat platform has a PlayStation version in development. Data miner Advaith posted a series of screenshots on Twitter showcasing what looks to be PlayStation support.
These screenshots show an option to “Join voice on PlayStation,” alongside the existing “Join on Xbox.” Interestingly, it appears as though this option is only available on PlayStation 5. On PlayStation 4 you will only be able to display what game you’re playing but not join voice chats. This could be a technical limitation or something that gets changed in the future.
The final screenshot shows how Discord integration will work on PlayStation. To use Discord, you’ll have to sign in with your PlayStation ID. Discord itself will redirect you to the official Sony website to streamline this process. This is similar to how it has worked on Xbox since it was formally integrated earlier this year.
Obviously, Discord Integration is a nice feature for PlayStation users but they aren’t the only people who benefit from this. Bringing Discord to PlayStation further helps bridge the gap between the major platforms. Once this is live PC, PlayStation, and Xbox users will all be able to chat together without having to use multiple devices.
Breaking down the wall
It wasn’t that long ago that cross-platform play didn’t exist and exclusivity was a given in the console industry. Not only did this force consumers to pick a side, it also separated friend groups and promoted tribalism. These issues have begun to fade in recent year, with cross-play now being a selling point of many modern titles.
PC Gaming has benefited greatly from this cultural shift. For many games, people who choose to play exclusively on PC can still team up or face off against their friends on console. The addition of Discord integration on PlayStation is a positive for all as it opens up social gaming to more people.
