Save those booze and cigarettes.

ZA/UM’s unique role-playing adventure Disco Elysium has won over a lot of the gaming community lately. But now, the real question is if players are ready to test their skills on a higher difficulty.

The developer announced today that the game’s latest update brings an “extreme” new Hardcore Mode to the table. In addition, there’s now UltraWide widescreen support, so players can get a better look at what’s happening.

What does Hardcore mode bring to Disco Elysium?

First up, the difficulty of every Check is now increased, which furthers you from seeing success with each battle. That means you’ll actually have to put effort into solving the case, as being a Total Disaster Cop will not do.

There’s also less cash on hand, so you’ll need to conserve every item that you find and use it better over the course of the game. And don’t think pharmaceutical items will give you a hand, because their prices have gone up as well.

Fortunately, Disco Elysium does have some items that can help you out. These include booze and cigarettes. Downing both of these will help build up your courage, which might get you out of a fight in one piece. Maybe.

What won’t help you as much, though, are the Thought Cabinet debuffs. They’re more painful this time around, which also works against your potential success. But if you can pull it off, you might be inspired by the bonus thoughts that come along. And building the extra HP with each task you finish is sure to help, too, as you level up a little more quickly.

The trailer below provides a good idea of just how tough things get with the Hardcore mode. It won’t quite be everyone’s speed, but Disco Elysium fans will surely want to give it a go.

Disco Elysium is available on Steam now. In fact, it’s actually on sale for a limited time, going for just $31.99.
