I wouldn’t be typing this if the Diablo franchise had never existed. It’s what pulled me into the world of videogames and writing about them for the past 20 years.
Today Diablo 2 turned 15 and it’s hard to believe it’s been that long since the great game graced our screens and sent many of us here on our future paths. Earlier this evening our Diablo 2 editor Flux (Eric Bruce) asked me if I can remember what I was doing when the game launched and I honestly can’t remember. I was probably in the process of trying to keep our web server online or some other technical issue that I handled at the time.
I do remember that some of the team had jetted of to the launch event which took place on a rather large boat with members of the Blizzard North team celebrating the game’s launch. Gaile was working with us at the time (she now works at ArenaNet on Guild Wars 2) and was tasked to report back from the event. Earlier today we dug out her article from deep within our archives and decided it was worth a repost to celebrate the anniversary.
Eric has posted up a look back at the launch day on our network site Diabloii.Net and it’s a fun read. He even managed to find our poll at the time where we asked our readers what character they would play first. Can you guess which one came out top?
If you have fond memories of Diablo 2 and can remember what you were doing 15 years ago when the game launched then drop over and check out the whole article which includes the launch day report.
