Destiny 2 The Whisper solo guide: Best loadouts and strategies

It's time to earn that solo Triumph

The Whisper is a technical Exotic Mission that tests your grit and precision jumps. While the quest is designed for a Fire Team, you can complete it alone with a little practice. Let me show you everything you need to know in our Destiny 2 The Whisper solo guide: Best loadouts and strategies.

Best loadout for The Whisper Exotic quest in Destiny 2

Let’s go over a few build recommendations and loadouts before looking at specific strategies. The lion’s share of The Whisper quest is made of grueling jump puzzles.

I can’t sugar coat it: you’re going to fall off the map plenty of times while you’re learning the ropes, but here are the jumps I recommend for each class:

  • Hunter: Triple Jump
  • Titan: Strafe Lift
  • Warlock: Burst Glide

These are my favorites, but you can complete the quest with any jump you like. I love the Hunter’s Triple Jump, as the additional hop gives some welcome fine-tuning. The Titan Strafe Lift allows you to scale wide chasms effortlessly, and you can tap the jump button for precision. Just keep in mind that Lift doesn’t stop you immediately if you’re in free fall, and you may have to press jump earlier than you think. The Burst Glide has been my go-to Warlock jump for years and immediately stops your descent when activated.

Best weapons for The Whisper exotic quest

I’ve had the most success during The Whisper with a decent Scout Rifle as my primary weapon. The quest is pretty light on enemy encounters until the final few rooms, and each one is littered with enemy snipers.

I’m a sucker for the Polaris Lance as it hits so hard, but it’s not the only viable weapon. My first Whisper Solo Clear was done with an Ammit AR2 Auto Rifle because I forgot to bring anything else.

If you’re a fan of Bows, you can’t go wrong with the Wish Ender. It’s great for long-range engagements, but you have countless options. You’ll be fine as long as you bring a ranged weapon.

As a solo player, I recommend bringing a decent Rocket Launcher as your Heavy option. Without a Fire Team to draw enemy attention, you need something that can deal burst damage quickly. I find Rockets best suited for the task. The Gjallarhorn or Dragon’s Breath are fantastic Exotic options. Something like the Cold Comfort or Apex Predator also works if your Exotic slot is taken.

Best solo strategies for The Whisper exotic quest

Most of The Whisper is a gauntlet of jump puzzles. The team and solo strategies are the same for most of the quest. We’ve covered every jump puzzle in a previous guide, and the only way to beat them consistently is to practice. Your best bet is to ignore the time limit entirely and expect to run it out a few times while learning the layout.

As a solo player, you want at least 15 minutes to spare by the time you reach the boss encounter. This may seem impossible, but once you understand the jumps, you can reach the first wave of encounters within 10 minutes. The biggest difference between group and solo strategies is in the battles, so let’s check them out next.

How to beat the enemy encounters solo in The Whisper Exotic Quest

You must clear three rooms before you can challenge the bosses. Fortunately, you can employ a similar strategy for each one. It’s also worth knowing that there is no respawn restriction in The Whisper quest, so the only penalty for dying is the time loss. I’ve found the easiest solo strategy for each room is to pot-shot enemies from the entrance with a Scout Rifle. To progress, you must defeat every enemy in each room, but the Taken Blights don’t count.

You can leave the Blights, although I like to destroy the one by the entrance in the first room as it’s obstructive. Once every enemy is beaten, you can shoot the Blight on the door to access the next area.

For the 2nd room, you can use the same strategy; just stay by the door for protection. Once you’ve handled the nearby threats, you can hide behind a pillar to the left and attack from there.

The final room is a bit different, as a couple of Taken Centurions will spawn behind you. These are a pain to deal with solo, but if they kill you, you’ll respawn, and they’ll walk into the final room anyway. Jump down the hole in the middle of the room to challenge the bosses.

How to beat the bosses solo in The Whisper Exotic Quest

The boss arena is huge, which works to our advantage. The best piece of advice I can give is to memorize the layout. There is a passageway on either side of the arena, and most enemies can’t follow you inside. These corridors are your lifelines in this fight, although I don’t recommend staying in them for the entire battle.

It’s worth running into the arena to grab ammo, and you’ll always want to be there when using your Super abilities. If you die, you respawn outside the door and can be back in action within a few seconds.

Once you’ve cleared the area, shoot the Oracles in the center of the arena (pictured above) to spawn the bosses. They are functionally identical to regular Taken enemies, albeit with a larger health pool. Save your Rockets for the bosses and use your abilities whenever they are off cooldown.

How to beat Tulgohr, Aspect of Agony

After you’ve beaten the Taken trio, Tulgohr will spawn. This boss is immune to damage until you defeat the three Taken Shield Weavers around the edges of the map. These targets are easy to dispatch with a Scout Rifle and are weak enough to take out at any range. I brought a Scatter Signal Fusion Rifle to this fight and found it worked very well as a point-blank option.

You’ll have to defeat the Shield Wizards twice, as Tulgohr will regain his Shield mid-battle. Much like the previous rooms, you don’t have to destroy the Taken Blights, although they do get in the way. Keep the mobs under control and use the edge passageways, and you’ll beat the encounter with time to spare.

What can I do if I can’t do the jumps?

The jump puzzles are difficult in The Whisper, so don’t sweat it if you can’t beat them right away. As I mentioned earlier, ignore the time limit while you’re learning, as you’ll breeze through it much faster with practice. If you’re really struggling, you can switch to the Strand Subclass and use Grapple Grenades. These unique throwables are great for saving messy jumps and can slingshot you into the air if need be.

You can also use a Sword with the Eager Edge Perk for a small air dash, although this technique requires weapon swapping and is a little fiddly. If you can solo clear The Whisper, you’re one step closer to mastering the Exotic Quest. Now, all that remains is finding the hidden Oracles to power up your new Exotic Sniper Rifle.
