The SyFy channel has revealed that it has commissioned a second season of the recently launched show sci-fi Defiance which is also tied to TRION’s MMO of the same name.
Defiance is currently four episodes into the first season, and based on what has been aired so far, I’m surprised a second season has been confirmed so early into this first season. The four episodes that have aired have been very disappointing with poor story lines, lacklustre visual effects, and soap opera cookie-cutter sci-fi characters.
The Defiance game has currently sold 1 million copies across all three gaming platforms, and considering the promotion it receives during the aired episodes and all the pre-release promotion, it’s not a massive number.
SyFy also revealed that the premiere of the show was watched by nearly 4 million viewers when it launched, the highest-rated original series this year for SyFy in the 18-49 age demographic.
“Bringing the rich world of Defiance to life has been an incredible team effort. We couldn’t ask for better partners than Kevin Murphy, his amazing cast and crew, and Trion Worlds,” said Mark Stern, President of Original Content for Syfy and Co-Head of Original Content for UCP. “We can’t wait to see where they take us in the second season.”
Production on the second season is expected to start in August and will air in 2014. What players of the game are going to do for story content between seasons remains to be seen, but they have stated today that players of the game will have  “the opportunity to further influence the world of Defiance” before the second season starts.
