Death Stranding GOTY nomination The Game Awards Geoff Keighley

Death Stranding gets GOTY Game Awards nomination—and 8 more

Death winning

Since its first-ever reveal, Death Stranding has been the talk of the town and for multiple reasons. First, it showed that Hideo Kojima would return to video game development once again with a new studio and new project after an abrasive departure from Konami. It also brought on a slew of commentary regarding its celebrity cast, adding people highly admired by Hideo Kojima. One of those people befriended over the years is Geoff Keighley, the person responsible for The Game Awards. Low and behold, Death Stranding sits on a pile of nominations for this year’s video game awards show.

Not so stranded

According to the Metacritic score for Death Stranding, the game sits at an 83/100 scoring by critics. This gives a reading of “generally favorable.” However, user reviews paint a much different picture. Either way, though, the end result around the horn is Death Stranding receiving nine total nominations for various categories. These include Game of the Year, Best Audio Design, and Best Performance. Both Mads Mikkelsen (Cliff) and Norman Reedus (Sam Porter Bridges) were nominated for their performances within the game.

Other notable titles

The nominations, considering the relationship that Keighley and Kojima have had in the past, might come off as something more than just a standard business relationship (whatever that means). But it shouldn’t blind you from the other titles who have also respectively gained nominations for this year’s awards. Other games include Resident Evil 2 (2019) for GOTY, Beat Saber for Best VR, and Apex Legends going toe-to-toe with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare for best multiplayer.

Initial reports indicated that Death Stranding would one day make the leap from PlayStation 4 as a sole platform and branch out to others, like the PC. This was later confirmed by Kojima Productions, having Death Stranding arrive on PC come summer 2020. You can also head to The Game Awards 2019 official site and vote prior to the Dec. 12, 2019 show debut.

Below are the rest of the GOTY nominees. The entire list for nominations is far too massive to place below. Or above. Or after the death stranding, who knows?
