DC Universe Online goes free to play in October

This article is over 13 years old and may contain outdated information

SOE’s DC Universe Online didn’t exactly set the MMO world alight and now they have revealed it is going free to play.
This October the game will be going free to play with a three tiered payment option system so if you;re a subscriber take note of the following information.
The three tiers will include ‘Free’, ‘Premium’ where players have spent at least $5 of in-game items and ‘Legendary’ which is a  $14.99 monthly fee should you want to continue down that route.
Free players will have access to the current DCUO content including Gotham City, Metropolis, and all current raids and alerts as well as access to two characters and a few other ‘benefits’.
Premium players will have access to extra character and inventory slots and higher cash limits. Extras such as adventure packs and further slots will have to be purchased in-game.
Legendary gets you the lot with 5 character slots, more than 80 inventory slots and access to all the future content updates.
John Smedley, President, Sony Online Entertainment added:
“When we launched DC Universe Online, we introduced a very different brand of massive online game driven by fast action combat to PC and PS3 gamers and with that, we discovered a new type of online gamer. We’ve listened to our community, and we’ve determined that the free-to-play model is the best fit for DC Universe Online.”
So another MMO finally realises that a monthly sub model is hard to sustain in the current market. We’re just surprised SOE has taken this long to change the model for DCUO.
