The MOBA genre is a brutal one to crack, so spare a thought for the Waystone Games staff whose Dawngate title has just been axed by EA. This scheduled closure may even have come as a surprise to the development team, as just 16 hours before the “important announcement” that their game was to be shut down, they were tweeting about new beta patches.

According to the cancellation post by EA’s Matt Bromberg, Dawngate had been in beta for the past 18 months. Six of those were open beta, but it seems that the MOBA never really managed to claw enough people away from better-known releases like Dota 2 and League of Legends.

There is at least a glimmer of good news for any players who spent actual money during the beta period; EA has promised to refund it all. Bromberg states that “All players will be entitled to a full refund of any money spent during the beta.  For most players, we’ll process those refunds within the next 10 days.”

Dawngate will continue to run for another 90 days (around three months,) before closing for good in early February 2015.

“On behalf of the entire team at Waystone Games and EA, I want once again to thank all our players for being part of this journey,” Bromberg concludes. “Your straight-up feedback and the friendly reception we received all over the world at events was extremely encouraging and important to us.”
