Wizards of the Coast is a publisher more commonly known for Dungeons & Dragons tabletop games and trading card games like Magic: The Gathering. However, the publisher has just announced its first video game title, Dark Alliance, with a humorous trailer. This action-RPG will be set in the Forgotten Realms in the Dungeons & Dragons universe and it will launch on PC on June 22.
Dark Alliance is being developed by Wizards Studio and Tuque Games and will feature real-time combat. Turn-based combat is far more common in the world of Dungeons & Dragons, so this should be an interesting departure.
Get the party started
Gathering a party to venture forth is an integral part of Dungeons & Dragons gameplay. Dark Alliance will be no different in this regard and will be playable in co-op with up to four players. The story will revolve around the iconic Dungeons & Dragons character Drizzt Do’Urden. The drow will be accompanied by his ever-present companions Catti-brie, Bruenor, and Wulfgar.
The Dark Alliance trailer doesn’t give much insight into the game’s narrative. It’s all hacking, slashing, and casting. The humorous nature of the trailer is also a bit off for Drizzt and the Dungeons & Dragons world.
We’re told Dark Alliance will have you battling Frost Giants, Beholders, and White Dragons in the frozen tundra of Icewind Dale. The baddies want to acquire the Crystal Shard to destroy the home of the heroes. Naturally, it’s up to you to stop them. You will be able to play as one of four heroes, each featuring a unique playstyle.
Dark Alliance doesn’t launch for another three months, but you can already pre-order the game through Steam or from its official website. If you’re feeling flush, you can order the retail exclusive Steelbook Edition or the Digital Deluxe Edition for $59.99 USD. These will both include an in-game Lich weapon set and access to the already planned expansion, Echoes of the Blood War. The Steelbook Edition also includes a few other bonuses.
