CD Projekt Red has revealed that the anime adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077, titled Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, will make its official Netflix premiere on September 13. Made by legendary animation company Studio Trigger, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will have all of its 10 episodes premiering at once, so viewers will not have to wait through any agonizing hiatuses for this one. In addition to the premiere announcement, the official Cyberpunk 2077 YouTube channel uploaded a new trailer that shows off the series’ eccentric style and dazzling animation. Before watching, though, just know in advance that the trailer contains quite a bit of gore and sexually explicit imagery.
At least a few of the key individuals behind this series have worked on some incredibly beloved IPs over the years. For instance, Hiroyuki Imaishi, the show’s director, has also directed the classic anime Gurren Lagann as well as Kill la Kill and the more recent Promare. Additionally, chief character designer and executive animation director Yoh Yoshinari created the successful Little Witch Academia short films and TV series. Even Akira Yamaoka, the composer behind the iconic soundtracks of the Silent Hill series, worked on the show’s score.
A quick refresher on Edgerunners
If you want to know about the series’ premise, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners follows the trials and tribulations of David Martinez. A young street punk, David resides in a dangerous futuristic city, which those who have played Cyberpunk 2077 will already know as Night City. One day, David ends up experiencing “a personal tragedy” that pushes him to assume the role of an edgerunner, “a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk.”
Despite the infamy surrounding its source material, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners looks like an incredibly stylish and entertaining ride. And hopefully it will make for a successful premiere. At the very least, being a TV series rather than a video game, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners won’t be plagued with glitches or anything unpredictable like that.
