Baldur’s Gate 3 is full of unique interactions with a large cast of NPCs you will encounter as you play through the game. Some of these characters will try to help you on your journey, while others will do everything in their power to hinder you — sometimes for no reason at all! One of these characters, the editor of the Baldur’s Mouth Gazette, schemes to ruin your reputation in Act 3 of the game. However, you can foil his plans with careful planning and by following the proper steps! Without any further ado, here is what you should do to avoid becoming a social outcast in the city of Baldur’s Gate.
How to start Stop the Presses quest in BG3
Your first step in putting this atrocious slander to rest is to find one of Baldur’s Mouth Gazette’s journalists. She’s hanging around Rivington, and when you speak with her, you’ll learn more about the editor’s plans and how you can complete the questline.
Enter the City
Your first move will be to enter the city proper of Baldur’s Gate, which shouldn’t take too long. We entered by paying off the gate guards so that we could travel to Wyrm’s Rock, and then worked to get a pass into Baldur’s Gate. After you get into the actual city itself, you need to travel to the building marked as Baldur’s Mouth on the map above. This is where the editor, printing press, and newspaper reside.
Take the Editor’s Key
You will meet Ettvard Needle, the editor of the Baldur’s Mouth Gazette, once you enter the building. He will tell you about his plans to slander you — even if he’s printing lies — and that you are going to go down in history as a terrible person. Of course, we don’t want that! Either obtain his key from him by physical force or try to convince him to hand it over, since you will need it to reach the basement of the building. Search for a steel door near some stairs, and then use the key to continue your mission. Just as a side note, if you decide to rest at this point in time, the paper will print its slander and your mission will fail. Don’t stop yet!
Stop the Press!
Now, for the main part of this mission, you will need to change what the printing press is creating. There are two options to convince the fey spirit who is working the printer to listen to your demands. Either persuade it through your sly words or give it a show of force and destroy something expensive-looking. Hey, anything to save your reputation, right? However, if you rescued Dolly Dolly Dolly way back in Act Two of Baldur’s Gate 3, the fey spirit will not need any convincing. Dolly Dolly Dolly has already told her friend all about you and how you saved her, so the fey spirit will want to repay you for your kindness.
Your last step is to find a story that can take the place of the slander since there has to be something to fill the new blank space. Take a look around the basement until you find the printing slates stored there, and then examine the slates inside your inventory. You will want to choose very carefully when deciding upon which slate you use for the new story since some can hurt your reputation as well. We recommend the story called ‘Cutest Cat You’ve Ever Seen’ since it does not involve you at all. This is the least risky choice, in our opinion, as you never know how the denizens of Baldur’s Gate will react to a story from the Gazette!
