Company of Heroes 3 guide – How to capture towns in the Italy Dynamic Campaign
There are multiple ways to capture towns in Company of Heroes 3. The most direct method is simply selecting a unit and right-clicking on a target. If you have movement points and action points, and the town is undefended, you’ll capture it instantly. Here’s the kicker: what if it’s defended? Well, this is when things get more interesting.
A town’s defenses are symbolized by shield icons next to its nameplate. If you attempt to attack it with a company, that unit will simply remove one shield. It won’t be able to capture it until all shields are fully removed. You’re essentially wasting your action points and turns if you do that. As such, your goal is to soften up these defenses first. Only then will you want to capture towns in Company of Heroes 3.
Other methods to weaken town defenses
- Using another company – Assuming two or more companies are supporting each other, then the weaker one could attack a town to remove a shield.
- Battleship Bombardment (150 munitions) – Have a Battleship target a town and bombard it using its cannons.
- Airfield: Bombing Run (100 munitions) – First, you’ll need to unlock the Bomber from any airfield. Then, you’ll have to purchase one (i.e., 150 manpower, 50 fuel, and 4 population). Only then will you be able to designate a target for a bombing run.
- Airfield: Paradrop (75 fuel) – For this one, you’ll need a Transport Plane, as well as either an Airborne or Special Forces unit garrisoned in the airfield. This lets you get behind enemy lines if you want to conquer a distant location.
- Artillery Company special action: Company Barrage (125 munitions) – Available to Artillery Companies, this action lets you conduct a barrage from further away.
- Partisan Actions – There are a couple of related actions that are unlocked once you’ve liberated your first Partisan Hub:
- Explosives – Damages enemy forces and weakens defenses in an area; the shield reduction effect is instant.
- Capture Target – Gradually lowers defenses each turn; captures the location when there are no shields left.
Last but not least, there are a few upgrades and perks that can aid you as you capture towns in Company of Heroes 3:
- Campaign Upgrades – Different types of companies have their own passives that can be upgraded. You can see these by clicking the Skills -> Upgrades tab:
- Special Forces and Airborne Companies: Liberate – Capturing a location does not cost an action point.
- Artillery Company: Elite Heavy Weapons – Improves the Company Barrage ability by increasing its range and reducing the cost.
- Artillery and Armored Companies: Influence – Capturing locations reduces the supply of nearby enemy forces.
- Airfield: Supply Drop (125 munitions) – Restores a company’s health, supply, movement points, and action points.
- Valenti Loyalty Reward: Local Relations – Gives a chance for the Capture Target action to double its effect each turn.
