One of the first main boss fights you will probably encounter in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the Colgera. After opening all the locks in the Wind Temple, you meet the source of the blizzard. A gigantic creature named the Colgera rises from the depths of the Stormwind Ark, ferocious and mighty. If you’re stuck on the Colgera boss fight in Tears of the Kingdom, continue reading this guide on how to best fight it.
Guide to fighting the Colgera boss in Tears of the Kingdom
The main thing to note about this boss is the fact that you’ll never be on your feet. The Colgera is a large flying beast that will require you to always be up in the air. If stamina is your biggest worry, I recommend that you at least upgrade it once using four Light of Blessings. I went in only upgrading my stamina once, and I didn’t have to worry about losing stamina riding the winds.
There’s one thing to warn you about that concerns both phases. At some points, the Colgera will disappear into a windy sphere. The sphere can then teleport somewhere else and it’ll emerge from it to surprise you, so keep your guard up.
Colgera boss fight – Phase one
The pattern to this fight consists of getting close enough to the Colgera’s three protected weak spots, breaking the protections, then hitting those weak points. There is a constant gust of wind blowing up from below, so you’ll always get a chance to fly up towards where the Colgera is. Get close enough so that you fly under the icy circles protecting the weak points. Then, pull out your bow, which will slow time enough for you to shoot.
Shooting at the ice with a normal arrow will take a few tries before it breaks. Instead, try Fusing an item to the arrow to break it in one shot. I always used Fire Fruits, since it’s made of ice, to break it in one go. Then, as soon as it breaks, don’t just leave it at that. Take out your bow again, and shoot at the weak spot. It only needs one shot to get rid of it.
Another thing to remember is how the trajectory of your shots go in Tears of the Kingdom. From far distances, your arrow won’t shoot straight on. At some point, it’ll drop, meaning if you’re planning to shoot its weak points accurately, get close enough to the Colgera. Just be cautious of directly hitting it flying by, as it will knock you off your paraglider.
If you’re looking for a more straightforward way of hitting it, you can actually fly above it, then dive straight towards its icy weak point. While above it, the Colgera will forgo its icy shell and try to hit you with ice from above. If you’re careful enough, you can avoid them. Make sure to accelerate by holding the ‘R’ button to dive straight through the ice and weak spot in one go. Once you get rid of all of its weak points, it’ll initiate round two.
Colgera boss fight – Phase two
Now in this second phase, the Colgera will start summoning tornados. If you hit one, it’ll knock you off your paraglider for a bit, but it doesn’t take too long to throw it back out. Also, don’t forget that Tulin’s wind gusts can help you fly forward faster. Whether you’re trying to avoid a tornado or get closer to the Colgera, Tulin is always right behind you.
The three protected weak spots are back, so you know what to do. But this time, you also have to worry about avoiding the tornados. Although the Colgera will summon about five at a time, there are still big enough gaps between them to avoid getting hit. As soon as you break those three weak points again, that’s it! You’ve finally killed the Colgera, and can continue the main story.
