Heist mission – Teammate roles, important choices, and deadly consequences
The Heist mission in Chernobylite presents several options at certain intervals. Your success will be dependent on the roles and expertise of your team members.
Choosing your teammates’ roles
You have five companions that can be assigned different roles. You want to pick the persons who’ll be most useful for that role since this gives you additional successful options during the mission. For instance, you can pick either Tarakan or Olga as your hacker. Tarakan is a tech wizard, so a key decision might make him say that he’ll handle it with ease. However, if it’s Olga doing this, she might say that it’s a big risk and she’d get locked out of the system.
Here are my recommendations:
- Infiltrator – Olivier and Sashko.
- Sniper – Olga.
- Hacker/Technician – Tarakan.
- Spy – Mikhail.
Key moments during the Heist
From time to time during the Heist mission, you’ll be prompted to make major decisions. Listen to the comments of your teammates since they’ll tell you if they’re going to be successful or if they might fail. Avoid options where they say that they’re going to be out of commission, or the NAR might find them. These incidents will take them out of commission prematurely and you won’t be able to get their help again. In some cases, the NAR soldiers might find them (off-screen) and they’d get slain. You also don’t want to use the explosives too early since these are needed much later in the mission.
Note: Don’t, under any circumstances, make Igor act on his own. Watch out for responses such as “Just go in” or “I’ll do this myself. How hard can it be?” because these will probably get someone killed. If you mess up, Tatyana will appear before you as a vision, admonishing you for your lack of preparation.
- Entrance: Pretend to be a prisoner – Your infiltrators will escort Igor through the entrance.
- Biometrics gate: Overload the gate – The technician will handle this smoothly.
- Sealed door: Kill the sniper – One shot, one kill.
- Electricity in the water: Cut the power – Tarakan will have no problems if he’s your technician.
- Corridor guards: Try to fool the guards – The infiltrators will use the password from Kozlov.
- Scientists: Agree to the spy’s plan – The spy and technician will distract everyone.
- Booby-trapped door: Use alternate passage – You’ll go through the vents outlined in Semonov’s map.
The last hurdles and seeing Tatyana
In the Shadow cells, use the explosives to blast your way through the door. This is why you don’t want to use the explosives too early. If you pick any other option, someone would meet their untimely demise.
Note: If you killed Semonov during “Some Excuses,” then you have nothing to worry about here. However, if he’s alive, then he’ll let the Shadows escape and one of your companions will be automatically killed (seen below).
There’s one more hurdle before you reach Tatyana, and it’s an area filled with NAR soldiers. Even if you’ve got all the companions and tools, and even if you’ve prepared well enough, there’s a chance that you’ll only have two options. If the sniper (i.e., Olga) blows up the gasoline tank, she’ll be dead. If you attempt to fight your way in, one of the infiltrators (i.e., Olivier) will be immediately shot (seen below).
However, if you followed what I mentioned in the previous section regarding Kozlov, then he’ll distract the guards for you. This is hinted at by Mikhail who says that the group should’ve had someone on the inside. It’s also implied by one of the game’s developers, Steam user Legileg, who mentioned that “Kozlov is a very honorable man.”
Continue along the path until you find a lab area where Tatyana is being held. She’s asleep or in suspended animation, and Igor is desperate to help her.
But, there’s still a surprise that awaits you.
Olivier will walk up behind you with his gun raised. He’ll admit that he’s a spy (which you already knew), and he tells you that you shouldn’t screw up again. Igor then replies that he wants to save their team. As far as I can tell, there’s a chance that Olivier would actually shoot and kill Igor here, but I’ve never seen it happen during my playthrough.
Update: It appears that Olivier needs to be at “Good” relationship status to prevent him from shooting Igor. I personally wasn’t aware of this beforehand since I mostly ensured that my companions weren’t at “Terrible” status. I’m also uncertain as to whether or not this scene would play out if Olivier was killed by the NAR soldiers during the Heist mission.
Follow the objective marker past this point to reach a second area. Anyway, let’s go to our separate guide to talk about the final boss and endings.
