The latest State of the Game report from Cryptic Studios has revealed that the upcoming expansion for Champions Online will now be free.
The expansion, previously referred to by its working title Vibora Bay, will be called Revalation, and subscribers will not have to pay for it as previously announced. Despite insisting that the content is worthy of a price tag, Chronomancer points out that the community means everything to the studio, and that it is excited to be able to share the update with players for free.
The announcement comes after an apology about the “kitchen sink patch” that was due to fix a number of issue in the game. The patch itself created another set of problems for gamers due to a lack of testing, which is explained thoroughly and honestly by Chronomancer.
“There were only a few players on during the time the Kitchen Sink Patch was on the Public Test Shard, and we simply didn’t allocate enough QA testers.” But he was quick to point out why Cryptic was keen to get the patch out swiftly, “There were so many issues we were anxious to address, that our desire to get fixes out to the players as soon as possible completely backfired.”
One can’t help feeling that the free expansion is being offered up as another apology for the patch mishap. Either way, players are bound to be happy about this latest announcement.
More information about the upcoming Revalation expansion, including screen shots, descriptions, item and costume details, are expected in the coming days. What we know so far is that it will be for level 37-40 players, it contains a huge level 40 repeatable lair and it will be released in March 2010.
