Can you explore Midgar in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth? (FF7 Rebirth)

"I miss it. The steel sky."

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth focuses on the open world aspects of the OG FF7, differing largely from FF7 Remake. However, there may be a chance to revisit the steel skies we’ve come to know. The majority of Final Fantasy 7 Remake takes place under the shade of Midgar. And while there are story sections that take you to other places, the bulk of FF7 Remake encapsulates the undersides of the Shinra city. Conversely, FF7 Rebirth has story moments in Midgar but doesn’t allow you to explore freely. So, unfortunately, the days of visiting the individual slums whenever you wanted are a thing of the past. While you end up being able to traverse some streets, you won’t be able to explore Midgar the way you can explore the larger open world of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

What can you do in FF7 Rebirth’s Midgar?

Without going too much into spoiler territory, you’ll start your journey through Rebirth in Midgar (albeit for only a few minutes). There are other times during the story that you’ll find yourself back in the city, but it is very linear. Besides the occasional chest and boxes to break, Midgar mostly serves as a set piece rather than a freely explorable space.

Walking around isn’t the only thing you’ll do during the brief moments in Midgar. You’ll be able to fight Shinra soldiers and delve into story elements more than anything else. And trust me, you’ll want to pay attention to everything that happens around the city of Midgar (especially for those Gongaga fans). If you need help figuring out just how long FF7 Rebirth is, we’ve got just the article for you.
