In many action games, you can stop your attacks by blocking, but can you block to cancel attacks in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth?
Blocking to cancel attacks can help you when you’re stuck in an attack combo or sequence, but you need to stop the incoming danger. Let’s go over how or if you can cancel your attacks.
FF7 Rebirth: Can you cancel attacks by blocking?
Unfortunately, from what I’ve seen in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, you can’t properly block cancel attacks. Although this is a fast-paced action game, if you’re in the middle of a basic or unique attack, blocking doesn’t immediately stop the attack. But I’ve found that you can much more easily dodge cancel attacks.
In my testing, Tifa seemed to do it the fastest at blocking. If you’ve pressed Triangle to use Tifa’s unique attack, blocking can sometimes halt the attack. But for everyone else, it seemed like blocking didn’t trigger until about a second or two later.
Instead, you should try to cancel attacks by dodging them. When you press the Circle button, your character will dodge, and this seems always to work, and nearly instantly, if you’re trying to cancel attacks. This also worked for every character I had.

As a reminder, I’m talking about canceling basic attacks, not unique ones. Some characters like Tifa could cancel their unique attack if you dodge, but others, like Red, would still be stuck in their unique attack. This also goes for Synergy Abilities or Skills.
Although Synergy Skills are essentially free actions, dodging or blocking won’t cancel them. Synergy Abilities work the same, as they take a while to charge up, meaning it wouldn’t make sense to be able to cancel them with a dodge or block.
Otherwise, you’re free to dodge cancel attacks in FF7 Rebirth, but I wouldn’t rely on attempting to block cancel them. In the realm of FF7 Rebirth combat, if you’re interested in trying to get Enemy Skill Materia to help you learn enemy techniques, we have a guide on that.
