During The Game Awards, Santa Monica Studios randomly blessed us with the first post-launch content for God of War Ragnarok — for free. The new DLC called Valhalla had me confused a little as to how to play it in God of War Ragnarok, do I need to get done beating the game main first? Find out below.
God of War Ragnarok: Can I play the Valhalla DLC without beating the main game?
The short answer to that question is yes, you can. According to a new blog post by Sony, you can start the new rouge-like mode at any time during the base game, you just need to access it via the menu. For me, this was a little more confusing than downloading Valhalla because I got an error message whenever I started up.

While the mode can be played at any time, to avoid spoilers I recommend playing it after the main campaign because Valhalla acts like an epilogue following the events of Ragnarok. There may be certain references to the main story in the mode that is mentioned that you may have not reached yet. So keep that in mind.
How to start God of War DLC
When you download and update the base game, head for God of War Raganorak’s main menu. Since the mode isn’t attached to the base game, it gets its own option within the main menu. To start the Valhalla DLC, you need to scroll down the main menu below New Game (or if you’ve beaten the game, New Game Plus+).
Upon pressing the option, you’ll be immediately taken to see the new mode. You can start the game with your pre-existing save, it’ll create a new one designated for that mode. So don’t worry about your progress being overwritten.
