It turns out that a little downloadable content can go a long, long way, especially in the Call of Duty community. Today, Activision announced on its official blog page that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare players raised $1.6 million for Direct Relief. This came through sales of its renamed “Outback Relief” pack of downloadable content for the game, complete with a special costume.

Making a difference

Sales of the pack throughout the month of January benefitted Direct Relief in an effort to fight back against Australian brush fires. Players came out in droves to help the cause, while at the same time grabbing special DLC for their soldier of choice.

Bryon Beede, general manager and executive vice president for Call of Duty, thanked the community for their support. He noted how “players around the world came together” to help the cause, and appreciated “everyone for their generosity” in giving back. Now, the team will “look forward to putting this donation into action.”

Patrick Kelly, co-studio head and creative director for Infinity Ward, also provided his thanks. He noted that “your inspiration drove the Outback Relief Pack,” and “we thank you for your support.”

Thomas Tighe, Direct Relief President & CEO, noted the “astounding act of generosity” from the community. He added that the team was “deeply grateful” for its support.

This is the latest effort from the gaming community to assist Australia in its time of need. Previously, Bethesda and Ubisoft also played a part through special game sales and donations of their own.

To learn more about helping out Direct Relief, fans can turn their attention to its official web page. And though the donation effort has finished, the Outback pack is still available now in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Fans that are interested can pick it up here on Battle.net.
