Can’t say I was expecting this to happen, but in a move that can only help to encourage the community to stick around Black Ops 3 will be getting mod and mapping tools on PC.
This won’t be happening at launch, and a “Closed Alpha” release is scheduled for March 2016, but Treyarch have outlined their rather encouraging plans in this new blog post. In case you were in any doubt, the studio has added the note “yes, this is for real” at the bottom.
Here’s what they’re hoping to do for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3’s PC version.
- You will be able to create Maps & Game Modes and more!
- We will include Unranked Dedicated Server Files with the tools so you can run servers with modded content anywhere you choose.
- We will provide an Unranked Server Browser so you can easily find and join servers with modded content.
- Closed Alpha target date:Â March 2016.
Can’t see much to complain about there, all would be welcome additions to the game. Treyarch do add a note of caution, saying “this is software development, so things don’t always work out exactly as planned”, but also include the line “sometimes [features] get replaced with other, more awesome features”.
It’s been a long, long time since a CoD has had this sort of support on PC, so, assuming this all materialises, that’s … actually quite impressive.
