Tim Schaefer and Double Fine’s quirky new adventure title Broken Age will be released for backers on 14 January. Tim Schaefer posted a couple of excitable Tweets saying:

“Haven’t shipped a game of my own in 4.5 years, an adventure game in 16, a point-n-click in almost 20. Next Tuesday is going to be exciting!”

“Next Tuesday is going to be exciting because that’s when backers can play Broken Age, Act 1! Public release date will be announced then too.”

This release will include the first act of the game which features a girl called Vella who has been chosen by her village to be sacrificed by a sea monster while the boy called Shay lives a solitary life aboard a space ship being watched over by a motherly computer. How these parallel stories pan out remains to be seen.

Double Fine managed to raise a whopping $3.3 million on Kickstarter and features some well known actors such as Elijah Wood, Wil Wheaton, Jack Black and Jennifer Hale. I can still see Tim Schaefer’s expression when he was probed about the money going on the acting talent at the VGX in December. Awkward.

For anyone who didn’t back the Kickstarter, Tuesday will be the day when a Steam date is announced.
