[Update: July 25 @ 1:43 PM ET]: Blizzard has confirmed that the release date of Wrath of the Lich King Classic is set for September 26. The expansion goes live on that date starting at 3 PM PT. Blizzard announced the date alongside a new trailer, shared below.
The original story, published on July 25, is as follows.
Blizzard announced that the Wrath of the Lich King expansion would be making its way to World of Warcraft Classic later this year. This announcement happened back in April, and it’s been a highly anticipated release for players of the MMORPG. Now, we might have a release date for Wrath of the Lich King thanks to an accidental leak by Blizzard itself.
Eagle-eyed fans spotted the news on the official website for Wrath of the Lich King. The website listed a release date of September 26 for the expansion. That date has since been removed from the website, suggesting that it was put there by mistake. Screenshots of the website also showcased an image that read: “The Lich King Returns September 26, 2022.” Wrath of the Lich King Classic is a return/recreation of the beloved WoW expansion, and it will be free to all players who have active WoW subscriptions.
A returning favorite
WoW players are already familiar with this expansion, but there are some new updates to this remade version to look forward to. The new release of Wrath of the Lich King Classic brings “improved features and content,” which includes achievements, new Barber Shop options, the Death Knight class, and a new Inscription profession.
Wrath of the Lich King is one of the most well-loved expansions in the history of WoW. The new and updated features are being designed to “thrill both veterans and newcomers.” Death Knights will start at level 55, and they cannot have their level raised by level boosts. Elsewhere, the level cap is being raised to 80, and Blizzard is not giving players a Dungeon Finder, as it wants players to focus on the social experience in WoW Classic.
WoW is also getting a brand new expansion called Dragonflight, which will be released later this year. It includes four new zones, such as the frosty Azure Span, as well as a new dragon riding mechanic to let players traverse the skies on customizable drakes.
