Around two years ago, design studio The Game Band introduced something entirely unique to the online world. That unique something came in the form of Blaseball, a free browser game that functions as a comedic baseball league simulation. This oddball project managed to gain a hefty fan following, which largely has to do with the fact that fans play a significant role in shaping its bizarre virtual world. Blaseball had been going through a hiatus over the past year, or consumed by a Black Hole as the developers put it, but this hiatus has finally ended in time for “Fall Ball,” a prelude of sorts to the game’s next major phase.
The Fall Ball event sees the aforementioned Black Hole reappearing and periodically dumping out the players it sucked up to form a new set of teams. While this happens, fans can go to the Fall Ball website and enter their email addresses to gain a series of Commemorative Rewards. The Blaseball community will receive more Commemorative Rewards as more fans enter their addresses, and this will allow the community “to gain key glimpses into the Blaseball universe.”
A few things to note
Notably, no games will occur during the entirety of Fall Ball, as running a baseball game while most of its players remain trapped in a Black Hole would present more than a few difficulties. Additionally, the number of emails entered and Commemorative Rewards received has no relation to the number of players that the Black Hole will release.
Presumably, once the Fall Ball event ends, Blaseball fans will finally return to the games and community-driven stories that made the game so popular before long. One can only wonder what kinds of wacky baseball team names and crazy scenarios the community will conjure up over the next several months or years.
