A new Blair Witch first-person, story-driven psychological horror title was announced as a world exclusive at Microsoft’s E3 2019 presentation. It comes with a release date of August 30. The game is being developed by the creators of Layers of Fear, Bloober Team. It will retail for an MSRP of $29.99.

Blair Witch is set in 1996, with a troubled former police officer named Ellis searching for a missing young boy in the infamous Black Hills Forest outside of Burkittsville, Maryland. No doubt this will turn out to be much more difficult, dangerous, and horrifying that a mere search through the woods.

That becomes all the clearer when the trailer moves to show off gameplay, focusing heavily on the use of lighting to create a sense of suspense. The player character uses two main tools to navigate the shadows and fog of the game’s forest environment: a flashlight and a camcorder. Both tools only provide illumination of a small part of the field of view, similar to what players may be familiar with from Doom 3.

The trailer also showed off various monsters attacking the player, suggesting that the game may include enemies stronger than the player. You’ll of course want to avoid running into these creatures. And they will, of course, want the exact opposite.
