Possibly in a move to ramp up even more interest for the launch of Mass Effect 3 on 9 March, developer BioWare has been discussing a possible MMO set in the Mass Effect universe.
BioWare head-honchos Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka have said that a Mass Effect MMO would come with “so many expectations” but that it would be “really interesting”.
“We already bit off a big thing to chew with a Star Wars MMO, and that’s not so small,” said Zeschuk.
“It’s daunting, but the neat thing is it would lend itself to a different type of gameplay. It’s fun to think about. It’s really interesting, I don’t know. It’s a tough one.”
Mass Effect 3, for the first time in the series, adds a multiplayer component of its own – co-op missions of up to four players which play out seperately from the single player. However, they do have an impact on your ‘Galactic Readiness’ level which will affect your single player game.
According to Muzyka, the “possibility space” for a bigger multiplayer component for Mass Effect is significant.
“The possibility space, that’s a term that I heard Will Wright say about ten years ago, and it really struck me,” Muzyka said.
“When you deliver a game, and you deliver it for a player, you have to capture what they think is the possibility space. You need to let them do everything they think they should do, and you can’t block them from doing anything they think they should be able to do. You have to nail all the features and content that should be in that possibility space. Mass Effect is a big possibility space.”
