In response to the ridiculous backlash over Mass Effect 3’s ending, developer BioWare had originally said that it has no plans to change the ending. Well, that may no longer be the case.
The “no changes” responses have now been deleted from the developer’s social media channels, with a generic “someone misspoke” line given as the excuse for their removal.
Instead BioWare has now issued a fresh statement on its Facebook page which no longer rules out the possibility of changing the game’s ending in response to the bitching from the vocal minority.
“We are aware that there are concerns about a recent post from this account regarding the ending of the game. In this post it was stated that at this time we do not have plans to change the ending,” reads the statement.
“We would like to clarify that we are actively and seriously taking all player feedback into consideration and have ruled nothing out. At this time we are still collecting and considering your feedback and have not made a decision regarding requests to change the ending.
“Your feedback and opinions are of the utmost importance to us. We apologize for any confusion this has caused. Our top priority regarding this discussion is to keep communication with you, our loyal fans, open and productive.”
One player is so against the ending as it stands that they’ve filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission on the grounds that the advertising campaign made claims that the game didn’t uphold.
I’m sorry, but when does an advert not present grander ideas than could possibly be realised?
Frankly, this whole thing is ridiculous. It’s not BioWare’s job to create an ending that pleases absolutely everyone. Videogames are creative works by creative people; creations and self-expression will invariable rub some people up the wrong way.
I wonder what’s happened to the people that embrace serious discussion and critical approaches to narrative? Instead we have knee-jerk reactions from ‘fans’ who think they’re deserving of the exact ending they hoped for.
What’s next? Studios running polls before a game has been released to make sure players will be okay with the ending? Grow up.
