Bigpoint Games, the German-based developer of Battlestar Galactica Online and Drakensang, will end development of games in the US according to the company’s soon-to-be former CEO, Heiko Hubertz. Hubertz will remain in charge until the end of the year, at which point he will become executive chairman of the company’s supervisory board. A replacement has not yet been named.

“We have seen that developing games in the US is not really the most efficient way for us at the moment,” Hubertz said. “The games that we have developed in the last two years haven’t been that successful, and the San Francisco area and Bay Area is quite a competitive market.”

40 jobs will be lost at Bigpoint’s San Francisco office, with a further 80 being cut at their studio in Hamburg.

Bigpoint opened the San Francisco office in 2010.

“Unfortunately we haven’t had the strong growth we hoped, but we had hired for this growth,” Hubertz states.
