Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a long-anticipated sequel to a beloved RPG. But after such a long wait there’s bound to be some pretty big changes on the way. Here are a few of the biggest additions coming to Dragon’s Dogma 2.
New Vocations
Dragon’s Dogma 2 has almost completely redone and retooled its lineup of Vocations. In the first game, there were several Basic and Advanced Vocations which all had completely different playstyles. And the same can be said here with the sequel bringing some classic Vocations back alongside brand-new ones.
For Basic Vocations, we’ve got Archer, Fighter, Mage, and Thief. These are all pretty self-explanatory with the most intriguing change being the separation of the Strider Vocation into Archer and Thief. For powerful Advanced Vocations, Magick Archer, Sorcerer, and Warrior all make a return. And three new Vocations come in the form of the Mystic Spearhand, Trickster, and Wayfarer.
Most Vocations are going to have some similarities with their counterparts in the first game. But with the addition of these new ones, there’s some exciting uncharted territory here. So even if you put hundreds of hours into the original game, you can challenge yourself with something different. I, for one, am checking out the Mystic Spearhand as soon as possible.
Oxcarts
Oxcarts are the new fashionable way to fast travel in Dragon’s Dogma 2. Ferrystones are still around but they’ll be extremely expensive and hard to find. Think back to their implementation in the original Dragon’s Dogma before Dark Arisen came out and you’ll get a good idea of what to expect. Oxcarts on the other hand will be a commonly available option.
The Oxcarts you’ll find in Dragon’s Dogma 2 offer up a big change to how you’ll explore the land. Instead of being able to choose a destination, Oxcarts only travel along certain routes. And not only that, there’s a fair chance that you’ll be attacked by monsters while traveling. So while this may be a quicker way to travel, it’s not necessarily more convenient.
Oxcarts signify how dynamic Dragon’s Dogma 2 is shaping up to be. By offering you ways to traverse the world that can be an adventure all on its own.
Campsites
It wouldn’t be a modern hardcore combat-focused RPG without some kind of bonfire equivalent mechanic. And in Dragon’s Dogma 2 Campsites will work as you’d expect. You can rest at them to regain health, cure ailments, and have a quiet moment with your pawns.
One of the Campsite’s best features is its ability to pass time. Just like in the first game, the nighttime is scary in Dragon’s Dogma 2. Not only is it truly pitch black just like it realistically would be, but monsters could also come up out of nowhere and strike you unawares. It’ll be a very welcome feature to set up a camp and have some level of safety during the late hours of the world. And it should make those long treks away from cities and villages a bit more bearable.
Deeper NPC relationships
The first game had a pretty basic relationship system with its NPCs. It could even end up with you getting into a relationship with a random fisherman you did a couple of side quests for in a village. Suffice it to say, this whole system was more funny than anything seriously additive to the game. But in Dragon’s Dogma 2 NPCs have undergone big changes.
The system is largely the same as it was before. If you help an NPC out, their relationship with you will improve. But the developer has also teased that certain choices can impact characters in more unique ways, too. And the real kicker with all this is that NPCs can permanently die. So if a monster roams into a city and attacks your best friend, they’ll be gone forever unless you can protect them or have a Wakestone ready.
You might want to take care of where you fight your battles at the end of the day. After all, you don’t want to end up ruining your perfect romance with an NPC.
New Bosses
Finally, the most important addition is of course more boss fights. Some of my fondest memories of the first game involve tense battles with a Griffon in the middle of a forest, to storming a fortress guarded by three Cyclopes. A lot of these classic enemies will return in Dragon’s Dogma 2 and there’s plenty of footage going around of some awesome Griffon fights already.
But what’s arguably most intriguing about Dragon’s Dogma 2 is its new approach to handling some boss fights. Take the Sphinx for example, which will be less about taking the creature on in a straight-up battle. It’ll instead take a more puzzle approach as it offers up a riddle for you to solve. It’s unknown how many other battles will take this sort of creative approach but the possibilities are exciting.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is sure to have even bigger changes that the developer has kept quiet about so far. A massive aspect of the game is all about exploring the ins and outs of the world after all. So there are sure to be plenty more additions and surprises to come when the game releases.
