Best Wyll build in Baldur’s Gate 3

The charismatic Blade of Frontiers.

During my first playthrough, I didn’t get much use from Wyll until I created what I find to be the best Wyll build for Baldur’s Gate 3.

Being just a Warlock can be a bit lackluster, so I created a Warlock/Fighter multiclass build that makes Wyll a great character to have on your team. Here’s how to make the best Wyll build in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3): Best Warlock/Fighter multiclass Wyll build

Respecing Wyll to be a Great Old One Warlock and a Battle Master Fighter is the best build for him in Baldur’s Gate 3. He can not only fight with a weapon, but occasionally pull out some Warlock spells. This makes him a very versatile party member who can both do melee and ranged fighting. Let’s dive into how you can create this great multiclass Wyll build.

Wyll The Great Old One Warlock/Battle Master Fighter multiclass leveling guide

  • Level 1: Warlock 1
    • Pick The Great Old One subclass
      • Mortal Reminder: When you land a Critical hit, the target and any nearby enemies are Frightened until the end of their next turn.
  • Level 2: Warlock 2
    • Pick two Eldritch Invocations:
      • Agonizing Blast: Add your CHA modifier when you cast Eldritch Blast to the damage dealt.
      • Armor of Shadows: You can cast Mage Armor on yourself without using a spell slot.
  • Level 3: Warlock 3
    • Pick one Pact Boon: Pact of the Blade
      • You can summon a pact weapon, or bind the one you’re wielding to make it magical. Pact weapons use spellcasting ability modifier (CHA) instead of STR/DEX.
  • Level 4: Warlock 4
    • Feat: Ability Score Improvement
      • Increase CHA by +2
  • Level 5: Warlock 4, Fighter 1
    • Pick a Fighting Style: Dueling
      • When wielding a melee weapon that isn’t two-handed or Versatile, deal an additional two damage.
    • Second Wind: Heal yourself for 1d10 + Fighter level HP.
  • Level 6: Warlock 4, Fighter 2
    • Action Surge: Immediately gain an extra Action to use on your turn.
  • Level 7: Warlock 5, Fighter 2
    • Deepened Pack: Gain an Extra Attack with your pact weapon.
    • Pick one Eldritch Invocation
      • Repelling Blast: When you hit a target with Eldritch Blast, you can push them up to 4.5m away.
  • Level 8: Warlock 5, Fighter 3
    • Pick Battle Master subclass
      • Four Superiority Dice
      • Choose three Maneuvers:
        • Precision Attack: Spend a die to add it to the result of an attack roll.
        • Disarming Attack: Spend a die to make an attack that deals damage and possibly forces target to drop their weapons.
        • Trip Attack: Spend a die to make an attack that deals damage and possibly knocks target Prone.
  • Level 9: Warlock 5, Fighter 4
    • Feat: Spell Sniper
      • Learn a Cantrip, and the number you need to roll a Critical hit reduces by one.
  • Level 10: Warlock 6, Fighter 4
    • Entropic Ward: As a reaction, you can impose Disadvantage on an attack roll against you. If the attack misses, you gain Advantage on your next attack roll against your attacker for one turn.
  • Level 11: Warlock 7, Fighter 4
    • Pick one Eldritch Invocation:
      • Book of Ancient Secrets: Gain the Chromatic Orb, Ray of Sickness, and Silence spells. They don’t expend any spell slot.
  • Level 12: Warlock 8, Fighter 4
    • Feat: Sentinel
      • When an enemy in melee range attacks an ally, you can use your reaction to make a weapon attack against the enemy. You also gain Advantage on Opportunity Attacks, and when you hit a creature with one, it can no longer move for the rest of its turn.

I chose the Spell Sniper and Sentinel feats to mix well with both classes, Warlock and Fighter respectively. Just make sure Wyll is using a Simple weapon, nothing Versatile, or else he won’t gain the extra damage from his Fighting Style.

Best Pact Boon for Wyll in BG3

I think that the best Pact Boon for Wyll in BG3 is Pact of the Blade, which works incredibly with this multiclass build. He can make weapon attacks using his Charisma modifier, and it deals magical damage. Not only that, but you can conjure a magic weapon you’re Proficient with at any point.

Seeing as Wyll is also in the Fighter class, he can benefit from this Pact the most. This Pact makes it so that all your points can focus on his Charisma Ability instead of sharing it with Strength.

Best Eldritch Invocations for Wyll in BG3

Choosing the best Eldritch Invocations can be a personal choice. These are granted to you at various levels and can provide bonus effects to your abilities. If you want to know what I think the best choices are, here’s what Wyll would benefit from the most.

  • Agonizing Blast: Add CHA modifier to damage from Eldritch Blast.
  • Repelling Blast: Pushes targets up to 4.5m away with Eldritch Blast.
  • Lifedrinker: Add your CHA modifier to damage with weapon attacks in the form of Necrotic damage.
  • Armor of Shadows: Can cast Mage Armor at will without spending a spell slot.
  • Thief of Five Fates: Can cast Bane once per Long Rest.
  • Whispers of the Grave: Can cast Speak with Dead at will without spending a spell slot.

By level 12, you’ll get the chance to unlock six Eldritch Invocations, which should be at least most from this list above. Agonizing Blast and Repelling Blast both upgrade your Eldritch Blast cantrip to make it a vital spell.

As a Warlock/Fighter multiclass character, Lifedrinker is another great Invocation, since it adds your CHA modifier to Wyll’s weapon attacks. The last three Invocations give Wyll three great spells. Two of them he can cast at will without expending a spell slot, which are Mage Armor (Armor of Shadows) and Speak with Dead (Whispers of the Grave).

Mage Armor will come in handy if Wyll isn’t wearing any armor. I also added on Thief of Five Fates for the useful Bane spell that can debuff enemies for your party. If you’re to choose any Invocations in this list, I think the first three listed are the most important.

Best spells for Wyll in BG3

While you only get two spell slots per Short Rest with this build, there are still some highly powerful Warlock spells and cantrips available. What’s great is that when Wyll runs out of slots, he can resort to the amazing Eldritch Blast, which we upgraded using Eldritch Invocations during the build. Some of my favorites from this list are…yes, Eldritch Blast, but also Misty Step, Shatter, Hellish Rebuke, and Telekinesis.

  • Cantrips
    • Eldritch Blast
    • Bone Chill
    • Blade Ward
  • Level 1 spells
    • Hellish Rebuke
    • Dissonant Whispers
    • Hex
  • Level 2 spells
    • Shatter
    • Misty Step
    • Scorching Ray
  • Level 3 spells
    • Counterspell
    • Hypnotic Pattern
    • Vampiric Touch
  • Level 4 spells
    • Banishment
    • Dimension Door
    • Blight
  • Level 5 spells
    • Hold Monster
    • Telekinesis
  • Level 6 spells
    • Arcane Gate
    • Circle of Death
