Research in Ara: History Untold is incredibly important, and will determine the success of your Nation, and how far ahead or behind it is. You need to know the best research per age if you want your Nation to survive.

Do note that you may wish to deviate from the Technology orders I’ve provided, and that’s okay. This is merely a series of strong recommendations should you be undecided or struggling to pick or understand what you should be focusing on in Ara: History Untold.

How research works in Ara History Untold

Ara: History Untold is played through three Acts, which are composed of four different Ages. For a Nation to advance into the next Age, they must research four of the Technologies of the current Age, then a specific Technology called the “Age Catalyst.”

Upon researching the “Age Catalyst,” that Nation will proceed to the next Age, unlocking that group of Technologies, but leaving behind any unresearched Technologies from the Age they’re leaving.

Don’t worry about any Technologies that you leave behind, as more complex Technologies will either offer improvements upon older Technologies, or will include items, improvements, or goods from previous Technologies.

You can avoid researching the Age Catalyst to remain in your current Age and grab any other Technologies you want, although it can be detrimental to stay a step behind the other Nations permanently.

When three players have advanced enough into the next Act, the Nations with the lowest Prestige will be “culled,” which removes them from the game. Make sure you’re gaining Prestige just as quick as you’re researching!

Each Technology has a Research Value, which goes over how many points are needed to complete it. Every Nation has a “Research” stat (in the top right of the screen) that determines how much Research can be achieved per turn. The higher your Research, the quicker you can breeze through researching Technologies.

So if you want to research Technologies quicker, increase your Research through building Improvements, employing Paragons, increasing the Knowledge Quality of Life in your Cities, or by any other means.

With that out the way, let’s get into the most optimal Technology order for every Nation.

Best research for Act 1 in Ara History Untold

Act 1 has a lot of leeway in Ara: History Untold, as the Technologies you may miss out here aren’t too detrimental as you can likely unlock their contents through future Technologies anyway. However, starting the game in a strong manner will allow you to keep a competitive edge that will follow you into the rest of the game.

For each Era in Act 1, you must unlock four Technologies before you can unlock the Era Catalyst.

Best Ancient History research order

Here is the best Technology order for the Ancient History Era in Ara: History Untold:

1. Ropemaking
2. Animal Husbandry
3. Grain Storage
4. Archery
5. Bronze Working

It can be worth spending a few extra turns grabbing Herbalism if you’re located near any Tea Leaves.

Best Bronze Age research order

Here is the best Technology order for the Bronze Age Era in Ara: History Untold:

3. Chariots
4. Sails
5. Code of Laws
6. Iron Working

Masonry is a great Technology to pick up here too, thanks to unlocking the Palace Improvement. You can pick this Technology up whenever you believe is necessary.

4. Coinage
5. Navigation
6. Sea Faring

If you decided against researching Sacred Rites in the Bronze Age, then picking up Cultural Heritage here is a must.

Best Antiques research order

Here is the best Technology order for the Antiques Era in Ara: History Untold:

4. Philosophy
5. Algebra
6. Bureaucracy

The Arches Technology gives you access to the Citadel, which is extremely effective at slowing down enemy sieges. If aggressive neighbors are a problem, you may want to spend some extra time researching this one.

Best research for Act 2 in Ara History Untold

Congratulations, for you have survived the harsh cradle of Act 1 in Ara: History Untold, and have graduated to Act 2! This is where things get more complicated, as the paths you picked in Act 1 will determine the paths you can travel down in Act 2.

Once again, these are only the recommended order of Technologies. Should your game take unique turns, you may need to go against this advice if you are confident in your strategy.

Once more, for each Era in Act 2, you must unlock four Technologies before you can unlock the Era Catalyst.

Best Early Middle Ages research order

Crossbows and Stirrups are lighter military technologies that can be researched if you are a militaristic Nation. Also, the Stained Glass Technology is necessary for the building of Cathedrals if you are a religious Nation.

3. Stronghold Engineering
4. Universities
5. Gun Powder

There are many other Technologies that support specific ways of earning Prestige. If you are focusing on certain domains over others, then make sure to grab the appropriate Technologies. It’s okay to be slightly behind if you are securing a Technology that will allow you to garner lots of Prestige.

Best Renaissance research order

Make sure not to research Windmills if you didn’t research Milling in the Antiques Age, as you won’t get to build the Windmill.

5. Industrialization

If you find yourself needing or engaging in naval warfare often, don’t neglect the Steam Engines Technology to access the formidable Ironclad.

Best research for Act 3 in Ara History Untold

Things speed up in Act 3 of Ara: History Untold rather significantly. There are many options in each Era, although a Nation only needs to research three before they unlock the Era Catalyst.

Whether you focus on picking specific routes and getting through the final Era as quickly as you can or whether you take a little more time to secure more Prestige through Technologies is up to how you’ve managed your Nation thus far.
