Baldur’s Gate 3: Best Minthara companion Paladin build

Although the Oathbreaker Paladin subclass is a fun one, I’d recommend having Minthara as an Oath of Vengeance Paladin. If you can manage to have Minthara keep this Oath without breaking it, here’s the best Minthara companion build in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Best Minthara Ability Scores

A Paladin’s main Ability Scores are both Strength and Charisma. Minthara will use Strength when in melee combat, but Charisma when spellcasting. I’d recommend also keeping Constitution pretty high so she has enough health to stay alive. The other three Ability Scores aren’t as vital.

AbilityScore
Strength17 (+2)
Dexterity10
Constitution14
Intelligence8
Wisdom8
Charisma16 (+1)

Minthara Oath of Vengeance Paladin leveling guide

  • Level 1
    • Choose the Oath of Vengeance subclass
      • Channel Oath ability: Inquisitor’s Might – Bonus Action allowing you or your ally’s weapon attacks to deal additional CHA Radiant damage and can Daze enemies.
    • Divine Sense: Gain Advantage on attack rolls against celestials, fiends, and undead.
    • Lay on Hands: Heal a creature or cure it of poisons and diseases.
  • Level 2
    • Divine Smite: Upon hitting with a melee weapon attack, can expend a spell slot to inflict more Radiant damage.
    • Choose Great Weapon Fighting Style: If you roll a 1 or 2 on damage die for attack rolls with two-handed melee weapons, you can reroll die.
  • Level 3
    • Divine Health: Passive feature allowing you to become immune to diseases.
    • Oath of Vengeance features:
      • Abjure Enemy Channel Oath: Frighten an enemy as an Action. Undead and fiends have disadvantage on the saving throw.
      • Vow of Enmity Channel Oath: Gain advantage on attack rolls.
      • Oath spells: Bane, Hunter’s Mark.
  • Level 4
    • Choose a feat: Great Weapon Master
      • When you land a Critical Hit or kill a creature with a melee weapon, you can make another melee attack as a Bonus Action. Also, you get a toggleable passive that allows you to take a -5 penalty to attack rolls for a +10 damage increase with two-handed or versatile melee weapons.
  • Level 5
    • Extra Attack: Can attack twice during a turn.
    • Oath spells: Misty Step, Hold Person.
  • Level 6
    • Aura of Protection: You and nearby allies gain a bonus to saving throws based on your CHA modifier.
  • Level 7
    • Relentless Avenger: If you succeed in hitting an enemy with an Opportunity Attack, you gain +4.5m in movement speed on your next turn, and it won’t provoke Opportunity Attacks.
  • Level 8
    • Choose a feat: War Caster
      • Gain Advantage on Concentration checks to maintain spells. Also, you can cast Shocking Grasp as a Reaction when an enemy moves out of your melee range.
  • Level 9
    • Oath spells: Haste, Protection from Energy.
  • Level 10
    • Aura of Courage: You and nearby allies cannot be Frightened.
  • Level 11
    • Improved Divine Smite: Melee weapon attacks will inflict an additional 1d8 Radiant damage.
  • Level 12
    • Choose a feat: Ability Improvement
      • +2 CHA

When building Minthara, I had in mind that I wanted to balance out her melee and spellcasting abilities. You can do this with the Feats chosen, which were Great Weapon Master and War Caster. Many of her Paladin spells require Concentration, so War Caster is super helpful. Also, Great Weapon Master will come in handy anytime Minthara kills an enemy, giving her an extra attack.

I also chose the Great Weapon Fighting Style, since two-handed weapons are the best. This also increases your chances of dealing higher damage with each attack.

Best spells for Minthara in Baldur’s Gate 3

Paladins have quite a few incredible spells they can use when they’re not using melee attacks. The majority of them require Concentration, so you won’t be using too many during each fight. But if you’re having a tough time choosing the best of the best, here are the best spells Minthara should use.

  • Level 1
    • Shield of Faith
    • Cure Wounds
    • Searing Smite
    • Thunderous Smite
  • Level 2
    • Magic Weapon
    • Aid
    • Branding Smite
    • Misty Step
  • Level 3
    • Warden of Vitality
    • Blinding Smite
    • Revivify
    • Haste

Shield of Faith is great for giving allies bonus AC, while Cure Wounds is your typical healing spell. I also like Searing Smite for extra Fire damage, and Thunderous Smite for the chance to knock your target Prone.

Magic Weapon simply adds a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls, and Aid not only heals but increases max HP. Branding Smite can deal Radiant damage, but it’ll also prevent enemies from turning invisible. Misty Step is an Oath of Vengeance spell that allows Minthara to teleport to another spot she can see.

Warden of Vitality casts an aura allowing Minthara to repeatedly restore HP to allies as a Bonus Action while it’s active. Then there’s Blinding Smite, which has the chance to blind your enemies. Revivify is crucial for tough boss fights when your party members start dying. Finally, Haste is another Oath spell that can increase AC, give you Advantage on DEX saves, double your movement speed, and give you an extra action!

With that Minthara build out of the way, here’s a guide on the best Wyll build in Baldur’s Gate 3. We have guides on nearly all of the Baldur’s Gate 3 companions, so check them out!
