Best Find Familiar animal in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3), ranked

What is the best Familiar in Baldur's Gate 3?

Familiars are really over powered in Baldur’s Gate 3, which makes Find Familiar one of the best spells in the game — and some classes can get access to it right after they finish customizing their character. There are six Familiars in BG3, besides Imp and Quasit which are special unlocks as you level up or make Pact Boons as a Warlock. Out of the six Familiar animals there are with Find Familiar, here is the best Familiar in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Note: While learning about the best Familiar will help you be successful in BG3, it won’t help you save Halsin. Be sure to read our guide if you are struggling to find Halsin the Druid.

What’s the best Familiar in Baldur’s Gate 3?

  1. Crab
  2. Cat
  3. Raven
  4. Spider
  5. Frog
  6. Rat

While all Familiars through Find Familiar are really powerful because they are all major damage sponges for enemy attacks, the Crab is the best Familiar in Baldur’s Gate 3. The Crab is the best Familiar in BG3 because it deals one plus 1d4 slashing damage and inflicts Pinched. Pinched enemies take two damage at the start of their turns, which is amazing for dispatching enemies quickly, and the enemy has reduced speed. Plus, it’s a crab.

Cat isn’t the best combat Familiar in Baldur’s Gate 3, but it is the best out-of-combat Familiar. Cats can meow to distract nearby enemies, which is really powerful as there aren’t many ways to move enemies in BG3. Plus, it, and all other Familiars really, can fit through rocky crevices.

Raven is the third best Familiar because it can fly which is useful for exploring and it has Rend which deals one damage and Blinds enemies. Blinded enemies have disadvantage and everybody has advantage on blinded enemies, which is really powerful.

Spider is next on the list because all it does is poison enemies and jump really far. Not that great. Frog is below spider because it doesn’t hit for much damage at all, but it can give its target disadvantage on Dexterity Saving Throws which makes it better than Rat. Rat is the worst Familiar in Baldur’s Gate 3 because it doesn’t deal much damage but can give its target disadvantage on Constitution Saving Throws.

If you don’t have someone in your party that can cast Find Familiar, I recommend recruiting a Hireling to make sure you can get Familiars on the battlefield in Baldur’s Gate 3.
