Hades 2: How to get an Animal Familiar

Getting yourself an Animal Familiar in Hades 2 may take a few more hours than you anticipated. The option became available to me during a random run, but you should be able to get an Animal Familiar in Hades 2 after visiting the hidden glade in Erebus and interacting with the cat enough times.

First off, you’ll most likely need to meet one of the two Animal Familiars, which is the cat named Toula at the hidden glade in Erebus. The other Animal Familiar is Frinos the frog that sits where you spawn into the Crossroads.

You can unlock this hidden glade by unlocking the Incantation called Woodsy Lifespring. It only costs one Moly and three Silver. Once you’ve unlocked it, head through Erebus and you’ll eventually find the hidden glade with Toula the cat.

You can interact with the cat, but that’s about it. After a few more runs of finding Toula and interacting with them, the next time I spoke with Hecate during the boss fight in Erebus she mentioned animal familiars.

After I won the fight against Hecate she granted me the Incantation Faith of Familiar Spirits. Unlocking this Incantation, which only costs one Lotus and two Nectar, allows you to turn trusted beasts into Animal Familiars using Witch’s Delight. You can now gift Witch’s Delight to either Frinos or Toula to have them as a companion.

Where to find the cat familiar

While Frinos is at the beginning of the Crossroads, you’ll have to find the cat in a new spot. Toula is located in the surface region called Rift of Thessaly, which is only accessible by unlocking the Incantation Shadow Extraction.

You should be able to spot Toula sitting at a dock in the area you come to after fighting the Guardian of the Rift of Thessaly. After feeding the cat Witch’s Delight, you’ll find them afterward in the Crossroads near your weapons and tools.

These Animal Familiars aren’t just for show, they can aid you in multiple ways through your adventures in the Underworld. Here’s how each Animal Familiar works:

FrinosToula
Can absorb enemy ranged shots. Will attack a nearby foe for 99 damage when you Sprint by her.
Bonus Max Life: +10Bonus Death Defiance: +1 (restores 10 health)
Tool Support: Tablet of PeaceTool Support: Rod of Fishing

Overall, the best Animal Familiar has got to be Frinos. Once you start to get waves of enemies with dozens of ranged shots, Frinos is vital for absorbing them. It’s also nice to get a little bonus to max life. I don’t think Toula is as useful since you can get a Death Defiance through a Keepsake and even an Arcana Card, and the damage isn’t too significant in the later dungeons.
